So I could not find any emails that I sent or documents. It was a while ago so I don't remember the details.

The mechanic told me that I needed to write Ford Corporate a message requesting that they provide a replacement for my transmission. It seemed more of a formality than anything. I wrote the letter and emailed it to the mechanic and he added that to the remaining documentation. I don't know if this is actually a thing or if my mechanic was used to dealing with Ford for warranty claims. That's what this is. It's a warranty claim. I was beyond the specified mileage but by only 3k miles.

Thankfully Ford did chip in with a 60/40 split. Essentially I paid for labor. I know this doesn't help much. I'll continue to search for the letter that I wrote. Hopefully I find for you guys dealing with the same issue

Not uncommon if you're nice/firm enough about it. I bought a 2003 Accord that had the 'made of glass' 5 speed. I was just outside of my 100k extended warranty and it blew up. Honda split it with me 50/50.

Why is there such a huge difference?

Thing only thing I can figure is volume. Way fewer 2wd’s are built??? So the unique parts are more expensive??
Are they physically different?

I'd almost wager that the units are the same length,

I'm curious. Does adding the cost of the transfer case to the 4WD bring the prices closer?

Just convert to 4wd at the price difference. Kidding, but $2500 gets a lot of conversion done. Seems like robbery. Back in the day the only difference was the tail shaft.

Driveshaft’s are different between 2wd and 4wd, most likely length difference seeing the flanges are the same on both. MSRP on the 4WD transfer case is around $2000. Of course it brings them closer in price but your still getting less material with the 2wd.

I wonder when ford puts in a new trans. Do they use the old style cdf or the new style cdf.
Everything is updated. The CDF drum, the outer shell and latest valve body. All problem areas. Late 2022’s and all 2023’s came with updated transmission.

I am sure they are installing a Transmission that has the updated internals, but since the P/N remains the same and the only indicator is the buildup date of the transmission itself, this makes it confusing to know for sure.
As with most Ford Parts the (-) indicates revision level, this is not the case with the 10R80.

I went down this path with Ford Parts & Svc Mgr on my truck.
Aug 16, 2022, Build Date - TSB path (On or Before Aug 15, 2022) has the old-style drum.
So, my truck is a special case and no clear answer form Ford - Does My Transmision have the updated Drum? there is no way to tell for sure (100%)
So, with the TSB and my transmission placard (Build Date July 25, 2022)
We can determine that at least in roughly July 2022 they started building them with the updated internals.
And if your Rangers Build Date is After Aug 16, 2022, you will have a transmission with the updated internals.

That is the only information we have to go by; I cannot see Ford installing a transmission that has a known failure record (1st production - Aug 15, 2022) but again the TSB only addresses the CDF Drum, it does not state in writing that if replacing the Transmission they must use a transmission built (July 2022) or after, so this is going to be a situation where the installing tech needs to be aware of this date.
The main question is - How many new Transmissions are in the system that do not have the new internals? and are they required to be torn down and rebuilt?
