I just completed changing the fluid for a second time in 4 months. First time around cured my major shift problems with the fluid change and 16 oz of LubeGard Platinum, and at 18K mile the fluid was filthy. I've been driving it daily running up miles to see if all my transmission issues are cured.
It has been shifting perfectly, but I here a little rattle occasionally when shifting from 3rd to 4th. At first I thought a heat shield might be loose, but as time went by it became clear that the noise was coming from the transmission.
So tonight I changed the fluid again at almost 22K miles, figuring the last time I replaced ~50% of the fluid, and this time around I replaced the same amount, so I am now at ~75% clean fluid. If I do it a 3rd time I'll be up at 87.5% new fluid. I added 8oz (50%) of LubeGard to hold the same recommended ratio.
Will drive it tomorrow and see if the rattle ceases. It was never constant, only occasional. It had already quieted significantly. I am hoping to avoid the transmission troubles others have had.
The first pass got me 98% to the goal. The transmission is really shifting very nicely. Smooth! But going to 4th was slightly rougher than all the other gears. Not bad compared to the past, but I want it better.
Here's hoping I didn't wait too long.
The MBS "FitzStick" Dipstick makes this task simple and fast. Suck the fluid out the dipstick tube into gallon jugs marked by the quart. Replace identical amount back in. Easier than the oil change! Didn't spill a drop.
UPDATE:
Drove the truck at speeds up to 85mph. 75mph constant for 40 miles in the interstate, then 45nph - 55mph on back roads back home. Lots of stop and go.
Shifts were smooth, and not a single rattle during the shift. This transmission (at least mine) is very sensitive to dirty fluid. And LubeGard Platinum really works!
Got home and rechecked the fluid level while the truck was still running. It was hot and the fluid level was slightly high so I sucked 8oz out to drop it to 4 on my "Fitzstick".
I'm going to keep driving it often to further test before going on a 1500 mile round trip in the next month. If the transmission proves to be reliable the truck is going long distance.
Pray for me if this thing fails along the way. My wife will forever haunt me about it!
