Tomorrow early morning I'll be going on a 12hr round trip this weekend. I went outside to check my fluids, fully confident every thing is fine. Go to check my transmission fluid and it's between 3 and 4. I drained/refilled the fluid and replaced the filter in April. I checked it after I was done with the fluid and filter change. I've also checked it multiple times since then and it was always between 4 and 5.

It's got 12k on it and it's been driving fine. I want to leave it alone but I also know it's gonna be on my mind. I just don't want to open up a can of worms. Lol

I do have the Fitz stick and a fluid extractor.

What was the transmission temperature when you checked it ( this time and before)

The trans is particularly sensitive to overfilling at sustained highway speeds. What usually happens is that you'll all of a sudden notice odd shifting behavior, that is usually the fluid foaming and causing all kinds of issues. If you are monitoring temps you'll notice that trans temp has spiked up into the 240-250 range and you will have likely blown a bunch of fluid out the vent.

Most of the time it is more of an ass clench than anything, but something you'll probably rather avoid. I've had it happen to me once, and now I make sure that the fluid is spot on or just on the low side of good.

It was at 210. When I did the fluid change and checked it was 215/216.

I watched my temp for weeks after the fluid replacement. It stayed within range and never spiked. It's shifting fine at hwy speeds and around town. I think I'm going to just leave it alone. It's been over 4 months and 12,000miles.

That's the thing. It can/will be fine and then all of a sudden, for whatever reason it will foam the fluid and cause issues. Not saying that's 100% for certain, but it seems to happen at higher highway speeds. Mine made an 8 hour trip all the way down to Florida and then acted up on hr 6 of the return. Just be cautious and pay attention. Especially if you are rolling 70+ for extended periods of time.

When you checked the fluid level, was the engine running and did you shift through all the shift lever positions and return to park before checking the fluid level?

Sure did.. I just stopped after being on the road all day. I still shifted it to the different positions.

Help me understand these transmissions a bit better….
  1. What is the normal range for fluid I should be looking for on the dip stick?
  2. What is the normal operating temperature range I should look for on a tuner?

210 plus or minus 5 degrees. The trick is not to burn your hand on the catalytic converter accessing the dipstick. That is where the dipstick sold on this forum comes in handy.

If you were good before and nothing has changed, I would enjoy your trip and not be concerned about it.

I found that the fluid level is sensitive to temperature, how it's been driven prior to checking and especially if it's on flat ground when checking.

I also found that if you put it up on a hoist to check the fluid, you need to rack it like it sits on the ground, if you just rack it on the flat of the frame, the front end goes up in the air first and the fluid will be a little low compared to how it sits on the ground.

But really, everything affects the fluid level, just ride the height alone, heavy loads in the bed, towing loads, no loads, lift kits, leveling kits and lowering kits, there are many things, that's why it's a range.

To me, the important thing is, you just want to make sure it's not too low, that's when shifting is affected.

What number range on the dipstick is considered “normal”?
