A few weeks ago, I noticed a couple odd things with my 2021 Lariat Tremor. Most notably was the moan/groan when I would go in reverse. I thought it was the brakes. Then last week on a warm calm day, driving with the windows down, I hear a metal grinding sound - not bad and almost like at wear tabs just quieter.
in this time, I also noticed the bump after coming to a stop occasionally. Now I’m thinking it could be the driveshaft. Although that doesn’t seem to affect the Tremor very much.

A quick visual inspection of the brakes shows that’s not likely the cause. We have a long road trip planned for next week. I need professional help. The truck went into the dealership this morning. I just got a message that the issues I’m reporting are due to “The rear diff. The bearings inside have failed and need to be replaced. We have ordered the part.” I’m covered under the drivetrain warranty. I’ll post the details once I know what was done.

Hoping the truck is cleared for travel. I’m in a loaner - newer Dodge Ram. I don’t mind it, but I prefer my own truck.

While it's never good when something goes wrong with your truck, look at the bright side. It happened now (and it's covered) and not when you were traveling which would've ruined your trip. Hopefully you get it back but luckily they gave you a loaner so all isn't wasted if you have to take that. Good luck!

I just texted the advisor with a question regarding concerns with fluid contamination and what this repair will entail. He did confirm it is a full overhaul of the diff. The gear set is okay though.

I hope they’re able to fix it before your road trip Dan. Good thing the drivetrain warranty covers it and that you caught it while you were “in town”.

Right after I bought my '21 Ranger, my '05 Lariat F150 rear axle bearings went out 50 miles from home on the way to Arches Nat'l Park towing my travel trailer...

Had to get AAA to flat bed the truck and tow the TT home...

Well, could not tow my trailer with the new Ranger (less than 1,000 miles break in), so trailer camping turned into a tent camping trip!

Had a great time in Arches and Moab!

What else is in the rear diff besides the gear set? We talking hardware that holds tension on the ring and pinion and what not that's being replaced?

If that went bad how's the gear set still okay? ?

Debris from a bearing failure could get into other bearings. The gear set is harder than any part of the bearing material. The advisor said they overhaul the diff. I’m expecting new bearings and seals, flush the diff and clean the gear set. Will see what the paperwork states.

Picked up the truck today. They tacked on a charge to inspect for the clunk when coming to a stop. This lead them to adjust my tonneau cover. Charged $122.00 for this. I disputed this. The service advisor said his tech of 25 years knows what he is doing and he is certain the rubber flap at the front of my Bak Revolver X4S was contacting the cab and that was the noise I heard and felt. So, after some mild debate, he agreed to remove this charge.

I ran several errands. The rest of the noises are gone. Glad to have my own vehicle back.

2023 Lariat. I had my rear differential redone at about 12,000 kilometres. The service advisor informed me it seemed to be a much upgraded unit.
Best of luck to you.

Great tip on the Bak Revolver. On my scab, that frigging front of the tonneau is about a quarter of an inch from the cab. Sure seems like they could have made it with one less slat to make it fit more nicely, especially for its price.

Glad your noise is gone, it can be really disheartening ....
