Hey dudes,

Thinking about doing a transmission service and looking for some advice.

I just hit 43k miles and I’ve heard Ford recommends doing it at 30k(?). Someone I asked said they did theirs around 45-50k. Just wondering if it’s necessary. Other than the occasional normal Ranger rough shifting, it feels like it’s running just fine (when I let the truck idle down to 1000rpm upon start up it seems to really help with the rough shifting). I want this truck to last me a long time so I want to stay on top of services.

Is it something I can do myself?
How much should I expect to pay to have a shop do it?

Thanks for any help!

“ Other than the occasional normal Ranger rough shifting” . There’s a TSB that addresses this. Depending on what year yours is it might be better to pursue the TSB route before worrying about when to change your fluid.

Actually, if you go by the owner's manual, it's 150K. As some have said, that's way too long to wait. Have your dealer check it out.

I had the dealership change my fluid & filter at 40,000 so the warranty wasn’t an issue down the road. (Ford uses every reason under the sun to not cover issues) 12 QTs of fluid and filter w/labor was $350ish. They will update the trans software if needed.

I just did mine at 60k and sent the fluid sample into a lab for analysis.

ULV is a good, stout fluid, so you're really not changing it because the additive package is wearing out. Mainly what you're after is getting contaminates out of the system. Even with our well designed filter, lots of people are developing problems with valves sticking in the valvebody causing all kinds of wonky shifting.

See here:

My personal feeling is that a drain and fill at 30k and filter replacement at 60k (Replacing fluid again of course.).

Also, a few of us are using Lubegard Platinum at the recommended dose and have found that shifts are significantly improved. @TJC

i paid over $900 for drop pan change out all fluid and replace transmission filter and that is apparently typical for the Dealer. I did it at about 61K it is actually recommended at 100K but most of us are getting it done in one way or another at 60. some people just change the fluid.

Other than the "rare" rapid self disassembly, there's nothing to worry about...just stick with the recommended 130K maintenance schedule...

believe it or not that was pretty standard, others report the same/ that said TOTAL ROBBERY/ the Labor was over 600 of it and it took under 4 hours. Insane. I have to admit though, having done many manual transmission replacements and some automatics// still rather pay them than drop the pan myself.

Yowch- I paid just over $400 US for that and I didn't ask for that level of service. I just wanted the $300 fluid exchange. The dealership left me a little low on fluid but I meant to add the Lubeguard Platinum anyway. 12 ounces and I'm almost perfect according to my Fitzstick. Drove 500 miles to Virginia and I can't say anything is better but it's certainly not worse and not bad.

I think the ‘manual’ actually says MUCH higher mileage for even trans fluid. Which may be great for some. I bought my ‘19 with almost 40k so did all fluids just so I know - trans, transfer case, both diffs and of course engine as well. Problem with the trans is you have to take the pan off and pour the oil out, a lift and oil catch strategy is pretty important

Or pump it out. Much easier unless you're doing the filter, and if you are doing the filter, makes it a slightly less messy proposition.

For sure, I had filters and gaskets done and wanted to see the pan. Turned out clean

Like you, when I get to 40000 mi drop the tranny pan and new filter.
The only issue is Ford and a independent shops all want $700 to drop the pan new filter and replace fluid lost. It's supposed to be acording to the book, 3hr job at a min of $100 a hour!
Bullshit, if I didn't live in a apartment, can't work on vehicles here, and I couldn't do the whole thing in a hour, I would take all my tools to Goodwill!
