I had my Ranger in to Ford for an oil change on March 12th. I paid ahead for the oil change service when I bought it so it was no charge. They also did alignment on the wheels. Happened to check Ford Pass today and it said I was down to 7% oil life, so I figure they just didn't reset it. But I decided to check the oil to see what it looks like. It kind of looks like it's possible they didn't change it but maybe I'm overly suspicious. I've driven 300 miles since the service and oil does not look new and seems to have that used oil smell. I'm wondering if they skipped the oil change and just did the alignment which I had to pay for. What do folks think --- am I off base or should the oil still look pretty clean and not smell used after 300 miles?

thats a tough one to call. 300 miles on oil is not many miles - even by old conventional oil standards that about 10 % of the oils life. Maybe check the filter and see if it is the same one. or look for drips and spills.

Knowing first hand the generally lousy service FAR too many dealerships provide, and I’m not just talking Ford, I’m betting you DIDN’T get an oil change.

Best way to tell on our Rangers? Look for oil not cleaned up where it runs down the “oil filter drainage slide” or broken, missing or damaged fasteners on the flexible cover where you access the filter. IF you have any of these things, then maybe they DID change your oil. ?

Yes, I would look at the filter, does it look new and shiny?
Oil with only 300 miles, should look new and golden brown, however if the old oil was very old and dark at the oil change, it is possible to have residual mixed and have a slight decolorization.

300 mile oil and 3000+ mile oil will look very different. It should still be translucent at 300 miles, but most likely dark brown at 3000+.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will check the filter and for other evidence. I was thinking it should be pretty clean still. If I can’t tell for sure, I’ll just do a change myself. Haven’t done one on this vehicle so I should learn that anyway.

i use mobil 1 and it always seems darker than most other brands even when new. so depending on the oil you use - or the dealer used- the color may not make any difference.

Good point. I now recall being asked if I wanted to use premium synthetic (or something like that) and when I said I had the prepaid maintenance, she said that’s what they would use.

My last oil change was the blended and at 300m it was clear and natural looking without any darkening. I am strongly considering going with synthetic from now on after doing some research on it.

not to change the thread to an oil topic but i my last oil change in my 4g was mobil 1. For the last hundreds of thousand miles the 4g always got whatever met all the specs but was best price. Wal mart oil like super tech or STP from autozone lol. by accident it got the good stuff this time. I have no proof or documents to show but the truck runs smoother, cooler, and is getting mpg than it ever has... My driving has not changed or fuel. I did change tires so that may be the mpg reason. but the others i feel are oil related. so i will never be a person that says everything needs synthetic - but in some cases it is better.

I use Rotella full syn. Very light in color. At 3000 miles, it definitely is not dark brown in color. I change at 10k or less, and then it is dark brown. Smells old, but no fuel smell. After all, it's a 2019 )
A look at the oil filter drain would show if it was done. Or just look at the shiny filter.

And I do love me some rum, the good stuff though, not the stuff you have to add sugary soda to in order to make it palatable...
