Stuck throttle? Some kind of medical emergency? Any back story there? That just seems awfully weird.
I'd guess shock as a possibility. He couldn't get to the top first try so he planned to go about half way down under power and whip a shitty and head back up. Only he lost control and went into panic shock in the final seconds. Many road crashes happen the same way. Drivers fixate on the guardrail or barrier and drive right into it.

I slid backwards down a dirt road hill just a couple weeks ago. Got part way up and hit ice, slid back into a ditch. Nothing I could do but turn around. Rain plus overnight freeze plus lots of shade trees means the ice really hangs around. But 4LO got me out of the ditch very easily.

Then it all melted and turned into a swamp and I almost got stuck again backing up to one of my log racks.

I'm just amazed at how long it took the buddies to react and move out of the way. The Jeep was practically on top of them before they decided to get out of the way. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that it was a "deer in the headlights" moment.

I'm thinking it was more of a "well, I know he will stop before he hits us" moment, followed quickly by an "oh sh^t!!!!" moment followed by a "checking your pants" moment.

Yes I'm thinking more that one, like surely he's going to stop, Oh Sh*t maybe not! Unusual problem for a Jeep, actually, usually the problem is keeping them going.

I mean, I ignore calls from unknown numbers as much as anyone else, but if I was lost in the woods, and kept seeing the same number pop up, I'd go ahead and answer it.
Yep definitely an example of Darwin at work.

Maybe not. Presumably, if they found out that the hiker was ignoring them because it was an unknown number, it means that the fool survived long enough for them to ask "Why TF didn't you pick up the d*** phone?!?!?!?!"

Here's an upcoming candidate:

That's just like an old NYPD Blue episode. Guy paid a witch doctor to make him invisible. At one point Medavoy and Martinez pretend they can't see the perp and he tries to tip toe out of the interrogation room. Funniest scene in the whole series.
