Why did you pick the Ranger over the Tacoma?

My wife had a US built Toyota, never again. She bought her 2004 Toyota Corolla new from the dealer. Well after it was out of warranty it needed engine mounts and I found a left engine mount bolt that didn't have a threaded receiver in the frame rail so they used RTV to "secure" the bolt in place. Found that the rear engine mount to subframe only had 2 of 4 bolts holding it in place because they hacked off 2 of them rather than remove the studs from the underplate that goes from the lower radiator support to the subframe and shares the holes there.

Seat position. Not made for older drivers. Almost bought a 22 Tundra that had great seats but too many turbo problems and ugly front end scared me away.

Not Toyota bashing but had to chime in. That new Tundra is freaking hideous. Seriously. WTF was going on in that design studio? Even if I was a Toyota guy I'd have to give a hard pass to the new Tundra. It's awful. It's rare that we see one that my wife doesn't comment about the ugliness of the thing.

Strange because I like the looks of the Taco's. But boy they missed the mark with the Tundra. Obviously just my 2 cents.

My Ford Performance bumper is a product of Thailand.

But at the end of the day Ford is a US based company. That last dollar in the deal always goes to Detroit. Unlike some of the foreign brands that brag about being built in the US. Maybe so... but that last dollar finds its way to Japan.

In 2020 (or 21 maybe?) the Ranger had the most US content of any vehicle sold here.

I LOVE MY RANGER, THE ONLY GOOD THING ONE CAN SAY ABOUT THE TACO IS, THE V6 SHOULD LAST LONGER BECAUSE IT'S AN UNDERSTRESSED ENGINE, NO TURBO

Part of me cannot help but agree with your comment. Just old habits, beliefs... and old school "experience." But I also can clearly remember the switch from V8's to 6 cylinders. I used to be hard core "Damn 6 will never last! Just stupid. V8 don't have to work near as hard. Gonna regret it. Dumbass engineers blah blah." Yet look at the automotive world today. When is the last time I even owned a V8? Wow, my 1986 Mercury Cougar. Never thought of that until right now. But every vehicle since then (EXCEPT THAT FRONTIER POS!!!) has been trouble free and long lasting. So much for my V8 attitude.

With Ford engineering I truly believe the 2.3L can have a very long life. Yea we have to deal with carbon buildup. But my Focus ST with the 2.0L Ecoboost has almost 70K miles on it and runs like a top. I maintain the shit out of it. Quality oil and filters (changed by ME!) and only top tier gasoline. No engine mods. Will do the same for my Ranger. (Once I get it. Sigh...) Additionally I will never mod the engine on the Ranger either. (Just me! No hating here for the mod guys!) So all in all I feel very good about the potential longevity of the 2.3L.

Actually read that thread before.. and just quickly reviewed it again. Really good info. But for me... I'll be paying someone for that service. I'm past the stage of "enjoying" vehicle work at that level. Heck I bitch when I have to do brakes now.

I would much rather have a truck named after a Texas lawman or a famed TV lawman than a furrin truck named after a US city !!!

Well, when I went to test drive my truck, my intention was to also test drive a Tacoma, which the dealer I went to also had (weird toyota/Ford stealership), but I would have only considered a taco if they had a manual in stock, which they didn't. After peeling off the dealer lot with just a twitch from the skinny one, I was sold. Plus they had nothing in Tacomas comparably equipped that even came close in price to my Ranger.

Trust me I'm right there with ya. I don't even bother doing my own oil changes anymore never mind doing this. lol Luckily I have a shop here I can trust but once we move I'll be on the hunt again for another good one.

Coming from a GX470 that has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned I strongly considered another GX, a 4Runner or a Tacoma but at the end of the day the gx was way too expensive and the toyotas are guttless and get bad gas mileage. I can tolerate low mpg if I'm getting power in return and I can tolerate great mpg for something slow, alternatively my ranger gets the best in class mpg and is fast. Ford made this one an easy decision...

I actually thought your crew cabs were like our extra cab with a space behind the front seats but only 2 door. I now realise they are the same as what we call a dual cab.

Yeah, it sounds like your "dual cab" is what we call a "crew cab" (or sometimes a "super crew" or SCREW), whereas your "extra cab" is what we call a "super cab" or SCAB.

I too came from a Tacoma. 1999 Scab 2WD V6 with the Tundra tranny. I still have that truck with 149,000 miles. I love my Ranger a lot more. The Taco has been a great truck for me. I did not even think of test driving the newer Taco's . I test drove a 2020 Ranger and then had them find me a Iconic Silver Lariat 4WD Scab and here I am 2+ years with no regrets at all. LOVE MY RANGER!
