Q: Where did the name " Pick Up Truck" come from?

Trivia...Ford, who made The first pick-up trucks were shipped to dealers in crates

that the new owners had to assemble , using the crates ,

as the beds of the trucks.

The new owners had to go to the dealers to get them,

thus , they had to : "pick-up" the trucks.

And now you know the "rest of the story."

@P. A. Schilke Phil, I was on the board of our Historic Association for quite a few years. This little '29 Huckster was donated to the Museum by our local telephone company, and with me being an old car nut was the only one that knew how to start, set all the levers, and drive the little thing. So, I was put in charge of it's care, and I was happy to be the one. All it needed to keep it running was a screwdriver, and a hammer. I drove that little truck in quite a few parades. :)

Here it is with it's Great-Grandson, my previous 2011 XLT.

Found it interesting when the wife and I would go out to North Dakota for a family reunion. To them a pickup truck was not considered a truck, it was only a pickup. To be a truck it had to be like a 1 ton stake-bed or a dump truck. Anything less than a ton was a pickup.

It must be a farm thing. My wife comes from a farming family and my truck is a "pickup", not a truck.

The story I heard - - - They were mostly bought by farmers and rough necks who, on Saturday night, would head into town for some recreation. The girls in the districts would call out: "Get ready, here come the pick ups."
