Yes, you can certainly force the jaws over the balls without pre-spreading them. The ends of the jaws are sharp though, so if you want to avoid scratching up the paint on the ball, spreading them before placing them onto the balls helps.
The paint probably adds to the force required as it likely adds to the dimension of the ball. Removing the paint would probably be preferred, as who know what will happen over time, but I can see that the effort is not worth it.

Please help me decide. Do the gas struts make the food higher? My prop rod seems very short to me, the hood will go up another 12 inches easy. I am tall, and want this aluminum baby up out of the way.

It does make it higher. Measured at the prop rod, to the exact same spot with the struts bringing it all the way up, it is 3.75" higher.

Here are the side pics.

What were the part numbers for the struts you got?
My ranger has the ball mounts already installed. I assume the struts should just click into place. 60$ For factory is easier to justify then 139 from redline. Unless I’ve missed any information on missing parts.
Assuming ball studs are in place on both the underside of hood and brackets near the hinge, yes the two gas struts are all that you need.

RETIRED!
Questions for you guys that have the OEM hood struts. I was going to order a kit with the OEM parts from the supporting vendor but figured I had better take a good hard look at my Ranger before I finalized the purchase. If I understood him correctly, the upper ball stud threads into the hood and the lower support bracket attaches to the fender with the existing hardware.

I do not have any threads in the hole (with the depression) on the hood, and there is no hardware of any kind in the location on the fender where the brackets go.

So for those of you that have the OEM struts, does you hood have threaded insert or is there a nut of some sort that you slip inside of the cutout to attach to the stud? And what sort of hardware is used to attach the brackets to the fenders?

I am thinking that the hoods used to have threads and when the struts were phased out they changed the hood design? My build date was in early June 2022.

I have a feeling I may wind up using the aftermarket kit.

I appreciate your input. Thanks.

If I remember correctly the brackets were welded to fender. Mine is March 2022 build with no mounting pieces at all. Went with Redline kit.

Same here Aug 22 Build, no mounting studs for struts upper or lower -Have Hood Prop.
Installed Redlines, to my knowledge they are the only aftermarket option available. If I remember correctly, they were created due to the support of a member of this forum working along with Redline Tuning to create a solution to Ford's deletion of the Hood Struts, and due to the amount of interest in alternate options from the members of this forum. They provided a quick and easy install and work great solution
The only issue is that when you remove the lower fender bolts with the body washer and install the supplied bolt, it leaves exposed unpainted metal showing, easy fix with a little touch up paint. I may try to see if I can get the washer off of the removed bolt, but just left it (As Is) for now - Installed about 6 weeks ago.

You are remembering correctly. Chris @Ranger_Dude got the ball rolling with contacting Redline. I “donated” my Tremor to do the initial install and is the truck in their pics and videos for installation. Great people to work with.

Here are some pictures of the Redline Tuning system from their website showing their mounting for the hood and fender:
