The paint probably adds to the force required as it likely adds to the dimension of the ball. Removing the paint would probably be preferred, as who know what will happen over time, but I can see that the effort is not worth it.Yes, you can certainly force the jaws over the balls without pre-spreading them. The ends of the jaws are sharp though, so if you want to avoid scratching up the paint on the ball, spreading them before placing them onto the balls helps.
