Last year was the first year I had to pay for my 2018 Fusion and the one for the 2020 Ranger was still free. I’m thinking that the 2019s will need to start paying this year if Ford holds to the previous way of doing things.

Plus, if you do get a ‘free’ version, that is only if you download and create the USB yourself, otherwise it had been $40 for Ford to send you a USB with the update.

They also provided an over-the-air/wifi map update last year, but it was a painfully slow process. I prefer doing it via USB so I can somewhat control the process.
I'm pretty sure I lost the "traffic" piece of the nav system this year so I'm thinking you only get that for 3 years.

As far as the maps, I think if you go to cyanlabs, you can get updated maps for free. Their update process is MUCH more robust than the Ford process honestly. If I decide to update I will use cyanlabs, not Ford.

The 2021 maps are available on Cyanlabs but Ford did something to the file that prevents them from being installed on a 2020 or newer Sync system.

Google maps updates for free. Plus live traffic.
The live traffic provided by SirusXM Travel Link in the Sync factory nav is decidedly better than the live traffic from Google or Waze.

My wife's 21 Jeep did not come with factory nav so she has to use Carplay and either Google Maps or Apple Maps. When Google Maps tags an area as congested it stays tag. For instance Google Maps is always showing the traffic light at the end of my street as red but there is almost never more than 2 cars waiting at the light. While Travel Link will only be red if there is actually a hold up. Also, on the other side of this light the town has had several crews out trimming trees back from the wires and a crew digging in the road for most of the month of August. Where each crew is the road has been reduced to one lane and there is always back ups. Google Maps has yet to indicate there is any traffic issues in that stretch of road while Travel Link flags it in the morning when the start work and unflags it in the afternoon when they knock off work.

IMHO, the only reason to use Carplay or Android Auto if you have the factory nav is the better voice recognition compared to Sync.

This might be a good place to ask since we're near the topic, but what other apps are compatible with our Sync 3? I saw Sync has a button called apps or mobile apps but nothing is ever there.

I believe Ford is just trying to keep owners from getting the maps for free when they are charging for them after a certain period of time (depending on model year). Owners may not like it, but it is their software and they can manage it however they want.

If Ford would simplify the update process, Cyan Labs probably wouldn't be necessary at all.

There is a whole list of Apps that are compatible with Sync Applink. You have to have them down loaded onto your phone then select the update from under that menu item.

I use Pandora, iHeart Radio and Ford+Alexa. The Ford+Alexa was great until the last update where they broke it IMHO. Now you have to keep your phone unlocked in order for the "Hey Alexa" wake up word to work and I can't seem to set Sync as a known Bluetooth connection to automatically keep the phone unlocked when connected like I can for other connections.

Good to know - thanks. And shame on Ford for messing up something that works WAY better than the Ford process.

Meh. On this car I don’t think I’ve used the factory nav and probably wouldn’t have ordered it if it was a standalone option.

I just wish google maps showed up on the right screen in the lariat cluster when using CarPlay.

Everything you get via Cyanlabs is bootlegged, there is no reason to expect Ford to do anything to make their property work with it.

You can actually pre download maps on Google if you plan to be on zero cell service areas. I was south west of Albuquerque without service for 3 hours, google maps came through.

GPS doesn’t require cell service which is awesome.
This works if you know where you are going and know ahead of time that the area has no cell coverage. Usually I am on a road trip and end up without service. Happened to me in lots of places in Montana a few weeks ago. I do have the areas I frequent near my home downloaded to Google Maps.

Mine will under Android Auto most of the time. It will almost always be there when I initially start the navigation with Google Maps. If I turn the truck off and back on (get gas, etc), when Android Auto reconnects, it is hit or miss if the info is on the right screen. In that circumstance, I'd say about 40% of the time it shows up, 60% no bueno.

No it's not, the app downloads directly from the Ford servers

Downloading on my PC now... free. 40 dollars if the download fails, or I want the official USB mailed to me.

I'll report back.
