that 4 liter was a thirsty bitch. good motor though. never had an issue with the 2 i owned
Hi Phil,

4.0L turned out to be a very robust motor....It had its teething problems in the development phase but Engine Engineering delivered in the end... Not particularly fuel efficient though.....

Best,
Phil

Phil is right about that 4.0 L’s fondness for gasoline. I loved my previous Rangers but they had the mpg performance of a full size truck. My 2001…

Agreed, it was a strong engine. I had a problem with the valve cover gaskets leaking. One was simple to replace, but the other one was awful... I was going to rebuild it, if I kept it, but watched some videos on how difficult setting the timing was, because of the shaft that went to the back of the engine... I looked and looked for a regular cab 2wd in good shape, as I always wanted to do a Mustang 5.0 swap, but never found one...

I was digging around. And found a couple pics of my 2007 Ranger. That hurt letting that go!

Letting mine go was the toughest part of getting my new Ranger, and mine wasn't nearly as spiffy-looking as yours. I had a 2003 base XL that I bought brand new, and was still pretty much stock when I traded it in Jan 2020. Just realized that it was pretty much immediately after I got rid of it that the world kind of fell apart, so perhaps I'm to blame for all the excitement of the past 2+ years. Sorry.

Mine had the 2.3 L. It was a pretty gutless engine, but I got even better MPGs on that pickup than I do with my current Ranger.

My 97 XL 2 wheel auto took me 23 years and 287K before trading it in for the one I’m in now. They gave me 1.5K for it ? Had holes in the frame big enough to put your fist through. I averaged 20 mpg pretty much it’s whole life. The timing chain was really messing up my timing at about 160K so… that’s when I did the top end rebuild. Only thing with the 3.0 was it sucked valves over time. I found a new pair of heads for 350.00 shipped .

I still have my father's 1999 Ranger 4.0 ohv with 5speed auto. I take it to local car shows occasionally. It has just over 70k miles on it.

Shes a beauty, its insane to look at how small trucks were our rangers are the size of old f150's and the rangers are the size of mavericks lol and new 150's are as big as old superduties
I just looked up the specs. Taking the '97 F-150 that Dave said he owned, it would depend on which configuration you are comparing against. If you do a true apples-to-apples comparison and compare extended cab short beds. The current Ranger sits near the middle of the previous gen Ranger and the '97 F-150. It is actually closer in size to the OP's 2007 Ranger extended cab short bed than a '97 F-150 extended cab short bed. Edmunds has the specs.

I had a 2000 Mazda B-3000 (the Mazda variant of the Ranger). I wish I had got the 4.0L. The 3.0L v6 was grossly under-powered, got lousy fuel economy and ran like crap on the blended fuel in Arizona.

Hi Jim,

Yep! 3.0L was not a powerhouse. Had a cleaning lady that hated America and such...Drove a Japan truck, a B-3000. She loved the truck and when she found out it was one of my Rangers at that time, talk about being dismayed... Not long before we dismissed her...she was a Olympian in women's field hockey but Jimmy Carter boycotted the Games...so she never got a chance to medal at the Games... Unfortunately a mental case that hated men and the world. A bad news bear...

Best,
Phil
