If you put it in sport mode at a dead stop and push the plus sign it will display the gears and shift automatically..but once you upshift again again ie 8th to ninth it goes to manual mode ..
From what I gather, you can call up the gear display when in drive by pushing the shift button.
I forget whether it is + or - though.

There is an oil dipstick center top of engine but not the tranny
Of course the subject of my comment was the transmission.
I think they simply don't trust the owner to check it or add the proper fluid.

Ok, that makes sense . I always press the plus right out of the gate and that puts me into manual mode. I'll try allowing it to shift automatically next time.

Once again... Ford offers no real answers.
There are tutorials for every inane operation you can imagine, but nothing substantive on the operation of the transmission and its modes.
Do they just not share the info or is the whole thing just a canard?
I notice that the thing has no dipstick either... Its not like Ford has a shortage of them.;)
Mine has an oil dipstick

Of course it does, the subject is the Transmission and I was refering to the operation and care of the transmission. I will go back and edit my post.

Ah, I've been used to Ford pickups not having an AT Dipstick for years, kinda threw me off topic seeing the statement about a Dipstick. :)

My son drove my truck home from the ladies golf tournament today and loved it. He asked me about sport mode and I said it held shifts longer and downshifted earlier. He then said that his friend has an Accord with sport mode and paddle shifters and he shifts it all the time. So he put it in sport mode and I pressed "-". The display flashed the 1 of and on and then it seemed to be in manual mode. So maybe that's the way to get it into manual mode right away? I was going to check out the manual when I had a chance to confirm.

I believe there is a dipstick on the tranny but you can only get to it from under the truck unless you install an extended dipstick. The way it is implemented is functionally useless.

Are you sure? Or did you maybe bump the minus which drops the top two gears?
Of course I don't have a Ranger (not even my old one now) so I don't know.
Using the minus to remove top gears only occurs in D mode. In S the plus and minus are used to actually shift gears.

No it holds 8th gear at 60 mph...you have to physically up shift to get to 10th
This is strange. I know mine goes to 10th in Sport/Auto and I just confirmed it on my drive to work. It could be due to my tune but I'm pretty sure it was that was before.

Sport mode will shift automatically , mine will downshift or upshift in either mode using the buttons, also in drive mode mine does not shift 1 3 5, it only skips 2nd gear and the rest are normal
