Heck look at all those Bronco's that were sitting (5000+) on dirt mountain. Plus there's a lot of commercial ones (fleet sales) in those pictures that are sold. I think the days of seeing hundreds of vehicles on dealers lots are gone and ordering will become the new norm now. Sure they'll have some vehicles for sale but having a full inventory of every model in every color I think those days are gone.

IIRC the new microchip plants being build here in AZ won't even open until 2024 so until we get thing built here I'd bet this shortage lasts at least another 2 years. Hopefully not but by looking at all the cargo ships sitting in CA and then add the labor shortages it doesn't look good for 2022.
I know that manufacturers are pushing that. Oddly they started doing that once they could no longer keep up with demand. Of course they're pushing it. They can't sell cars they can't build. But orders figure into the bottom line.

Fact is, in the US, we buy cars off the lot. Seems to be a horrible way to make money trying to convince your customer base they are wrong.

The current state of things simply cannot continue. If it does, life as we know it is going to drastically change. The last thing any of us will be worried about is what model year vehicle we buy.

I wonder....

Curious to see how this plays out.
Apple Computer has this game down pat. Selling new/old stock as 'refurbished' to keep the prices high.

Things could get worse with the way China is posturing against Taiwan.
America has been set up for major 'fail' ever since the Clinton Administration when our industrial base was largely moved to China. Major Depopulation is part of the 'grand plan' too unfortunately. America's 'test' will come when Chinese and UN troops disembark onto American Soil. The movie 'Red Dawn' (1984 and the 2012 remake) were prophetic.

Have heard a lot about what is going to happen in a few podcasts. Most people arent sure what is going to happen but the future of vehicle purchasing will probably be a mix of what it was, off the lot, and then the more European model of order and wait. Here in the USA, for the most part, the data shows we like to show up and drive home with our new ride.

How sweet it wouild be if a flood of 21 and 22's hit the market at the same time driving prices down... Ford wanting to keep its consectutive streak of best selling truck alive and offering some low, low prices.... Doubt the big 3 will have that happen though...

Just a reminder, the F-250 were removed by the end of September.

Just because Clinton was in office doesn't make it his fault.

Most companies are in business to make the owners a profit. So if things are less expensive elsewhere, that's what they may choose.

Wasn't it Nixon who opened China to the world? Some crazy economic theory about emerging countries, natural resources/raw materials and cheap labor. Go figure. Wait, wasn't America that country a couple hundred years ago?

It is not a vicious circle we live in, more like a vicious Mobius Strip. What goes around comes around.

I wonder....
If these trucks were built in 2021, and the parts shortage is going to continue into 2022, how will these trucks be marketed ? Can't re-vin them as 2022's. Not used, so maybe "leftover" 2021's...
And will they be discounted cause they will be a year old, or older when they are finally completed and sold ? How much of a discount cause their going to compete with the new 2022's that will be in currant production.
Curious to see how this plays out.
I bet they will have BIG rebates on them.

Forget China and the UN, I’d worry more about the Great Snowbird Uprising - Florida will be the first to fall, closely followed by Yuma, Mesa and Scottsdale. Palm Springs won’t see it coming until it’s all over.

Yeah, I was going to mention that my 2019 had about $7K + worth of rebate/markdowns when I bought it in mid-2020.
I got a lot of rebates too on my 2019 but times were much different then. There must have been at least 30+ Rangers to chose from when I was there in every color and model.

With the lack of inventory and the dealers marking them up now even if there are rebates the markups will negate them. Sad but true but this is what we're faced with at least for the next year or two.

I posted an article a while back where Ford said they wanted to do this. They want to go to an order based system, there would still be dealer inventory but very limited. I can see it from their perspective as they don't have to deal with flooding dealers lots while we have all these shortages going on only to turn around at the end of the year and offer huge rebates to move units.

I've done a mix of both in the past 60% orders and 40% off the lot purchases. It's ok if you don't NEED a vehicle right away but like you said most want it now and don't want to wait. Then there are those who's vehicle either broke down and don't want to dump more money into it or worse had an accident and need a vehicle now. It'll never work unless every manufacturer does this and if they do say goodbye to big rebates like we're use to.

I hate to say it my friend but look around and the world is/has already changed a lot in the past 9 months. To much can be said but without getting political I'll just leave it at that. :lipssealed: Like you I hope/pray things get better and the next year will be a tell tale sign on the direction.

Even then it will take a while, making high quality microchips is as much art as science. It may take them quite a few months to begin reliably making acceptable yields of chips. Even Intel and AMD bin quite a lot of product and they've been in the game for many years. However they can always de-rate a faulty CPU chip and re-test it for sale as a lower spec model. Don't think you could do that for a body control chip for instance, imagine, this ones going cheap because it refuses to roll up your right rear window!

Up by my house, GM builds the Colorado/ Canyon twins. They have them parked in a field by a rock quarry. I took this picture the other day. Have to zoom in to see but there are thousands of trucks hid out here. This supply chain is hurting everyone

All those trucks are completely fine. Sitting there because nobody wants them...

That’s another amazing pic showing what a mess the auto industry is in?
