I sold a 2017 Ford Edge Titanium with 26K miles for my father-in-law to Carvana last September, on the back shoulder of the pre-delta pandemic peak. The Carvana offer of $24,712 beat Vroom by over $1.5K and the local, in-town dealers by $2K-$4K. The entire process was easy, seamless, and quick. The gentleman who showed up in the special Carava car carrier stayed masked throughout the transaction, and the first thing he did was disinfect the interior of the car. After a quick inspection, we spent 5-10 minutes on paperwork and signatures using the cargo area under the open hatch as a desk. He handed me the check, and we were off. It all seemed way too easy, in fact so easy I rushed to get the check deposited just to make sure it was all legit (it was). It sure beat dealing with all the hassles of a private sale. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

Yup, even though it wasn't carvana, when I traded in my 2018 2wd Colorado with 16k miles on it, I got 18k, with a large dent in the side of the door. Imagine if I got a quote from Carvana instead of the dealer, could of made off with a few extra grand but Ford Kearny Mesa took care of me with a good deal so I did not mind making a seamless trade in to them. It's a world of a difference trading in vehicles you own.
You also have to factor in the sales tax savings once the trade-in value is deducted from the final price. At least that's how it works in my state.

Definitely shop them all. Quotes for the vehicle I sold last month varied by $5k. CarMax had the best offer. Transaction was smooth, local lot was pretty busy, but I was out with a check in hand in less than an hour.

I watched the quotes for a bit and they were starting to fall when I sold a couple weeks ago. If you're gonna do it, cash out now.

Also, the sales tax is a valid point. But I would avoid buying a car right now if you can. Sell to highest bidder now, and wait for the market to normalize before buying if you can.

I sold my outback to them after I bought my truck in March. Excellent experience. With used car prices as they are they gave me more than I would have gotten if I sold it myself, and it was painless. Got the online offer, scheduled a pickup. They came to my house with a flatbed, took a few pics, I signed the paperwork, they handed me a check and drove away. 15 minutes start to finish.

Others make a good point about sales taxes, etc. The dealer offered me insulting trade in price, and while I gave up $2000 trade in discount on the truck I got $4000 more from carvana than the trade in price. It was a 2009 Outback so we're not talking a newer car.

I sold my 2015 Golf TDI to Carvana after buying my Ranger. They were $2000 above the KBB Private party value and $4500 better than Carmax. I have no idea how they were going to make money selling it. I was completey surprised by the offer and the process was easy.

For my 2009 outback kbb private was something like 8k or 8500, I forget. It had 56k miles in nearly perfect condition. Trade in price I got from the dealer was something like 4500 which was not happening. I put it up for sale on craigslist for 9k firm, and carvana offered $8600. Well worth it to not have to mess with a private sale. The carvana price had gone up 2 weeks in a row and I probably could have gotten more if I waited, but I just wanted it gone.

I think they sold it as soon as it hit the site for $13500

Gotcha.

Using the quotes you've got listed in your OP trading in at the dealership will only save you about $1240 in sales tax at an 8.25% rate. And that's at the $15k dealership high mark. With those numbers Carvana would still put you $2800 up.

If you can go without the Explorer until the Ranger's delivery, understanding there might be more delays, I'd sell now. If you need the vehicle or are unsure of the financials and want to keep the ability to walk just do the same math when the delivery day comes and decide accordingly.

yeah it is my only vehicle so my plan right now is wait a few days after I get notified that the ranger is shipped. Go to the dealer and start the paper work process (if they let me) but hold off on any down payment until it arrives for inspection and at that point get a trade in value. Then a few days later get a carvana (or highest quote) and take that back to the dealer. If with in sales tax amount go with the dealer. If not go with quote and rent a car for a few days and hope the train is on time.

Sounds like a winner. Only thing I'd suggest is to go with a CarVana, or whoever is best at the time, quote in hand the first time. Might save you some hassle.

I just sold an Outback to Vroom. Good price, easy process, no hassles. They listed it 2 days later with a 10% markup over what they gave me. I’m good with that.

Sold my 2015 F-150 XLT screw 2WD for 32k last month. As the supply returns the prices will drop.

Sold My 2019 Honda Civic Si to Carvana before buying the Ranger. They offered me $600 more than I paid for it brand new. When the guy came to inspect, he sent the payoff payment without even walking all the way around the car.

He even left me with the lockbox code in case I needed to move it before their truck came to pick it up.

It was by far the easiest and smoothest transaction I have ever had selling a car.
