How’d it do on the dunes? Silver Lake I assume?
Yeah, silver lake. I ran 21psi in the front and 18 in the rear on stock hankooks which have 42k miles on them. I was able to make it up all of the big dunes at least once and basically drive wherever I wanted with a little bit of speed. I have the fox 2.0 shocks and coil overs so that helped with the bumps I suppose. No damage and sand mode definitely helped a lot. (I tried in regular mode and it was not great at all.)

Due to some schedule/planning changes I had to go and pick up some stuff. So I did a small 900km drive. Left yesterday evening and got there at 2AM. Slept overnight and packed up the trunk in the morning and drove back. Started out at 11AM.

Total drive time around 12hrs due road construction on the way and speed capped at 90km/h. Pretty much drove 80-85km/h all the way. Time is taken from the trip computer so breaks are on top of that.

Few things I noticed on the trip:
  • Long-haul MPG is excellent 8.1 l/100km (29MPG) dry run, bit more loaded (Diesel powah)
  • Sync 3 navigator needs an "goverment limited maximum speed" option, time estimates were way off and showing ETA few hours earlier
  • Fords attempt at high-beam assist is POS. Sure it might work at real night, but dusk seems to be problematic. When it's totally dark but horizon has light it just doesn't turn on the high beam. This might be a minor issue in equator where dusk lasts 15mins, but in here the dusk was about.. whole night. I suggest taking lessons from VW or Peugeot where it just works.
  • Heated front window wire mesh makes annoying light bloom at dusk when driving against sun (low angle, bright sun)
  • Truck is much more stable with full load
  • Lane assist is jerky and gets fooled by long asphalt repair stripes. Ended up doing on/off ping-pong on some places
  • Engine & transmission runs much smoother after heating up for 50km
Anyway, trips done and after few cups of coffee I'll do the unloading.

Feels like forever since I've been here but have been busy putting the truck to work.
Hauling old kitchen cabinets to my daughters for her garage.

Hauled some trash today but didn't get a picture of that.

Went up to Flagstaff for our yearly get away from the heat vacation. We never get rain and wouldn't ya know it was torrential down pouring out from 7am-2pm so we left a little later than usual.

I'm still amazed driving up here with the elevation changing from 1000' - 7000' how well the Ranger drives. My Tacoma would be shifting in and out of every gear and at 5000 rpms while the Ranger is smooth as glass and cruising at 2000 - 2200 rpms.

Nice break in the heat though at 60 degrees up here, should've brought my winter coat! ?

Mendocino National Forest, checking out the burn damage from last year's August Fire Complex. It's about 85-90% decimated. Still some pockets of foliage.

Does make for some nice shooting conditions! Was able to safely sight down to 300 meters when tree cover normally makes this tough.

PS. I've yet to encounter anything that has required 4WD. Aired down, rear locker, I've been able to follow drastically more modified vehicles through some decent trails. Adding a rear swaybar, so maybe then I'll lift a wheel and need it.

I DID NOT try to pull out this mother-stumper today! The Ranger stayed in the garage. My old '04 SCab pulled out so many shrubs, rhodos, trees, and stumps, I shoulda called it "Stumpy". That was the 4.0 V6, 4x4, 5 speed stick, and I'd wrap the chain around the trailer hitch, get a start, and yank away. But I was afraid to do that with an automatic, even with 4-low. Visions of expensive trans repair danced in my head (I'm not an auto guy). I dug and dug, steel bar, and chain sawed all day, not a smidgeon of budge. So time to call for a backhoe...no offense, Pepper:crying:

Yep. You will spend more time unloading the backhoe than removing that stump. That's the only way to go.

Went shopping and parked it again next to a Raptor. This time more detailed pics of the comparison, you guys might enjoy.

Remember mine is lifted front and back and I have slightly bigger tyres 265/70/17. Raptor uses 285/70/17.

Drove up to End of the World today. It's a 23 mile drive up Forest Rd 231 in Flagstaff. Nice easy somewhat smooth road with some nice scenery along the way. Once you're at the top just pick any opening for the spectacular views. You can camp anywhere along the way or right at the top. There are many other fire roads off this main one that take you to other view points. Worth checking out if you're ever in the area.

Did you feel the vortex (and not the lame GM Vortec)? Or is that just around Sedona?
