The Ranger is the first vehicle I have ever driven that I can't push out of drive to neutral without engaging the trigger. I always though of it as a safe way to disengage from drive or reverse to neutral in an emergency situation, without risk of going to far to the opposing gear.
I second this quote (and thought). They should NOT have required the trigger pull to transit from D to N. I never drove another vehicle that requires this.

Operator error. What’s the big rush to go from Sport to Drive. And then move the lever all the way to Park? I don’t get it.

When I pull back to S mode, the button stays depressed then pops out when I slip it back to D.

I am sure there was no intent to go to Park. It was just a too aggressive a move from S to D and the detent failed to engage to prevent further movement.

Aggressive is an understatement. It’s a LONG way to park.

Yup, I pulled the trigger each time, assuming that was required for any shift up or down. The manual makes no mention of this at all that I saw. Sure wish I’d known that before potentially damaging my transmission!
Wrong …
Operator Error …
S to Drive is a simple push forward…

I thought newer vehicles had electronic lockouts if you put it into park while driving?

This guy does it with a newer Ford at 65 mph. Guess our trucks are different?

Although anyone of us would “freak out” if something like this happened it’s nothing to worry about. We had an ongoing joke on here about using the rear backup camera while driving and just dropping into reverse at highway speeds. Who’s first!!! ? We have electronic tranny’s so no harm done. It will not shift into reverse or park unless your full stop or a 1 mph or 2 max forward movement. Otherwise it does nothing!

As a lesson though. Going from sport to drive is a nudge on the stick. Just get it to move and it will drop into drive. Do not use the release trigger as this overrides the intent

I had been in S and once at speed didn’t need it to rev high etc and longer. I didn’t slam it or even apply much force at all. I baby the hell out of my cars when they’re brand new. What I didn’t know was that it didn’t require the trigger to be pulled to move from S to N, which is apparently why it didn’t hit the lockout. I still think it’s a bit crazy that even with the trigger pressed, you can shift from drive into reverse or park.

You can feel it catch in the depressed position when you put it into S.
I’ve only had the truck for a few days so I hadn’t noticed that yet weird that there is no mention of that in the manual at all. I suppose it’s easier to learn by simply putting the car in reverse or park while driving, posting on a forum and waiting for everyone who already knew to let you know how dumb you are for not already knowing;) oh well, at least it appears no damage was done.

With that trigger depressed, you’d be shocked how little effort it took. I’m very very easy on my vehicles. It happened so quickly I didn’t even know what had happened for a moment. The way each of the selections have a sort of peak and valley, they almost pull the lever along. The crazy part was that once it happened, it wouldn’t come back out of park until I came to a stop.

I hope so cause it sure sounded awful, metallic ratcheting sound of the parking pawl trying to engage.
