My solution now is to not look at the stick and have ford change oil at the milage they recommend. If the ecoboom goes boom then they pay to fix it . Turns out all the eco motors do this not just the 2.3 . They are gas motors designed as a diesel. Not a problem for diesel to be in the oil .
That is not correct, the 1.6 L EcoBoost in my Fiesta ST is also GDI and has not had any fuel dilution problems.
I don't know if you were serious about the diesel angle but fuel dilution is just as serious an issue on diesel engines, I worked as a generator tech for a few years and had serious fuel dilution problems on a few of my engines (which FWIW were caused by residual pressure on the injectors when the engines were not running)

Well after years of smelling fuel in my garage at the end of the day and oil dilution I finally sold the truck. I paid cash for the truck and the value was tanking. At 50,000 miles It started to sound more and more like a diesel on startup. I do have ARB skid plates and a catted SPD stainless downpipe for sale if anyone is interested. Maybe my oil dilution problem is rare and maybe the engines will last a while, but there are no maybes with my replacement truck, 2021 Tundra TRD Pro. New overland build has started!
IS TRD the abbreviation for "TURD" ? LOL

I suppose that depends on your view of TURDs. Within 50k my ranger had engine problems and the interior was showing wear, I have a 2008 Sequoia with 175,000 miles and everything works the way it should. There is a reason Toyota holds value and Ford sinks like a rock.

I’m not saying rangers are bad, I’m saying mine, that I paid 42000 cash for, was not worth it. I have owned other fords, I have a Ford tattoo from a crazy college trip to Vegas, I just wasn’t happy and didn’t trust it. I have 3 Toyota’s now from 08, 15, and 21 and not a speck of rust. I live in CO and have that luxury. Sure on the east coast I would be concerned with famous Toyota rust. But heck rusted out 2000s LX570 and land cruisers still sell for half of what my 2019 ranger sold for. When you don’t finance something it changes your opinion on depreciation and value. I’ve worked hard buying and selling Bitcoin and I’m not a fan of losing 5k in depreciation a year!

Interesting angle on depreciation. According to this article from just today the ranger isn’t even worth buying lightly used right now because the depreciation is so small relative to what you can pay for a new one. Did you pay MSRP or something?

Funny enough the Tundra is on there as well but it’s lower on the list than the ranger.

haha ironically i think the layout of the ranger is kind of meh. To be fair i think most of the midsize trucks interior/layout is meh. That includes the cheap plastics. But its fine, it doesnt bother me as it does others. But for comparison, my 19k jetta i bought in 2009 has better interior layout and options. Soft plastics on dash and doors, both driver/passenger seats are powered and heated. One thing that stands out for example, is the power windows (oh btw both passenger and driver windows are powered and comes standard) controls are up more on the door side armrest and includes the side mirror controls. On the ranger they’re oddly positioned back and its kind of awkward having to reach back for it. In addition, the side view mirror controls are awkwardly positioned behind the steering wheel for some reason. But again, not issues just something ive noticed and found this topic kind of amusing.

I am new here but am fairly knowledgeable on automobiles. Most fuel injected cars have the electric fuel pump in the tank. This thread says that the pump is mounted on the engine block and is driven by the camshaft which means it is mechanically driven. If it is mechanically driven how does it prime when you open the door? Also if it is mechanically driven how does it activate when the key fob is nearby?

Can some explain / answer my questions so I can learn more about the fuel system on the Ranger? I have a 2021 on order.

There are 2 fuel pumps on DI vehicles. The low pressure fuel pump in the tank, and the high pressure fuel pump, which is engine driven and provides the high pressure needed for direct injection.

John,

Did you ever take the truck into the dealership to address the oil dilution? What did they do?

Here's some info of actual oil level increases. The initial fill was 5.9 liters.

5090ml.PNG

With 325 ml added.

320ml.PNG

With 650ml added.

Each 5.5% increase raises the oil level 5.5mm approximately. The hash marks to the top hole would be about 11% increase.

To get accurate levels on the dipstick you need to wipe it off and install it about 4 inches from fully seated , wiggle it around and rewipe. Do this a few times. Get all the residual oil out of the tube. Then quickly dip and pull for a correct reading.

With the 2.5 inch level kit my engine takes exactly 6 liters to the top of the hash marks.
