You didn't say anything to the service writer beforehand? That's oddly proactive of your dealer. Where do you find one of those?

Hey guys,

Been watching this thread for sometime. My ranger also has the Fuel Smell issue. I have run now two Blackstone samples on the last two oil changes that came back 3.5 and most recently, 4.5% fuel dilution. I'm at 26k miles right now with the truck. And I change oil promptly at 5k. Dropped off at the dealer today and they basically are telling me they can't see anything wrong with it. Quoted me a bunch of "backfire" test results that showed they aren't seeing any issue. Although, when I had an oil change at the dealer's shop (3 oil changes ago) the tech mentioned the oil smelled of fuel. I can't really tell if it is "making oil" according to the dipstick as it seems every time an oil change is done they fill it to a different level past the two dots. I check the following morning after getting the oil change before starting to get a good result. Should I pursue this more? Let it go? Love the truck but I also don't want stupid issues starting at 85-100k. At 30-40k$ we should expect a good quality vehicle to last a long time.

Yeah, this thread has single-handedly made me re-evaluate my long-term plan with this vehicle. I have 12K miles now, Ill probably trade up to a new version when she's around 50k miles.

Hello all,

I originally saw this thread when I bought my truck last April (2020 Lariat, build date 01/2020 I believe). I change my own oil and check it regularly. Had no issues in the first 15000 miles. Even had the Mishimoto catch can on for about 7-8000 miles, no issues.

I started to notice the fuel in oil mid December 2020. So I took an oil sample and sent it off to Blackstone. While I waited for the oil analysis to come back I took the truck to the dealership (they could smell fuel as I pulled up into the service bay). Since I change my own oil they changed my oil for me and scribed the dipstick and told me to come back in 3000 miles to see what would happen.

However drove the truck 500 miles and the oil level kept rising over the level they scribed. By the first week in January I got my blackstone results back that showed 3% dilution. Brought the truck back to the dealership, they contacted Ford Engineers, who eventually determined to give me new injectors. The truck however is still sitting at the dealership (Since Jan 11th ) as they are backordered on parts! So hopefully that will fix my issue. Maybe ill get the truck back before the end of the March.:rolleyes:

Please report back in let us know if the new injectors fixed your issue. For some it has but not for others. Thank you.

Got my truck back from the dealership today. The oil level was just below the overfull hole. The service manager called me and gave me a copy of the email response from Ford. Apparently the new oil check standard for Ford is it is okay as long as the level stays between the two holes on the stick. So apparently the hash marks mean nothing(to Ford). Even the manager did not agree with this. Then they also said short trips under 20 minutes is what they think is the problem. Service manager told me to keep a eye on it and if it gets above the overfull hole give him a call and he will try again. Otherwise drive it till the next oil change. Have 2000 miles on it since last change. The manager thinks I will need a new long block eventually as he has already done one in a explorer with the same engine. To him it sounds like Ford know but not doing anything yet. I will get the email scanned in and post it later.

I'm really struck by how quick these engines sheer down oil viscosity, even in engines that don't have the fuel in oil problem. I was planning on 5k oil change intervals but may have to lower that. There is no way I would go by the oil change monitor.
@HenryMac read this thread. I know it's a lot, but it should enlighten you.

If adding 6.0 qts puts the oil above the hash marks . . . then does adding 6.2 qts go up to the top hole ?

In that case, everyone would be at the top max hole following an oil change even without fuel dilution ?
6.2 quarts put you at the top of the hash marks or slightly over I believe. 6 quarts put you in the hash marks. The dealership was only filling mine up to the center of the hash marks at the oil changes.

this is off topic but relates to my issue also as I have been fighting with Ford about this also but my question is , is there a way to print off this entire topic and when i go back to dealership i can give them some reading as they always say that they have not heard of this from anyone else I know it is 87 pages but our copier at work prints great.

Their memo & maintenance page don't even agree. According to memo I have been running low from day 1 ( Max Lower Dot -Min Upper Dot) According to maintenance I have been running wright on full since day 1 ( lower dot min upper dot full). Unless I have been reading a dipstick wrong my entire life. ? To me auto start/ stop feature in traffic would be a cause of excess starting. ? Disclaimer I am no engineer. :headbang: What's a person to do. I can't stop then it hurts.
