2.3L EcoBoost has a Metal Oil Pan and Drain Bolt

I’ve used Fumoto valves before, they work great and you don’t have to remove drain bolts or replace crush washers ever again.

I’ve never put them on a truck becuase I was worried one bad hit & off it would come, but the factory skid plate should stop that.

It would be a great "how to" article on here if anyone does it. It certainly does look interesting. I'm just curious how much room there is underneath the skid plate - if you have enough room to get your hand up there to open the valve.

That’s a great feature of the fumoto valve, you can position it however you like so it’s oriented up, down, left or right.

There’s no correct orientation!

I confirm that personally I can get my hand to the drain with the skid still attached, the XLT has a metal pan, my fumoto on the last vehicle didn't hang lower than the pan, and the trans pan is plastic as plastic can be, and has no skid plate covering it on my FX4 XLT.

Any other questions?

The fumoto for the 2.3L Explorer should fit, any guinea pigs?

EDIT: I was the guinea pig, and the valve will not fit. I got the extension, but have not yet tried putting it on, clean oil and whatnot.

Does the xl have a plastic pan?

All should have a metal oil pan, but all also have a plastic trans pan...and no skid plate to protect the trans pan. I wonder how long until a trans skid plate comes from the aftermarket folks ?

The Ranger in the video is a non-FX4, just a 4x4 Lariat. I remember seeing in the Frontline magazine, it stated that "4x4's will get skid plates".[/

Seems odd that I paid 1300$ for skid plates, and a pretty important piece of the truck is left un-guarded. I'll likely build something out of 1/4" steel for that spot, possibly thinner as it's not something I'm going to be bashing on a lot.

Amazon has them too, they are about 30$. I'll probably order it up soon as I'm planning on changing the oil around 3-4K for the first one.

There is no such thing as break in oil.All high end cars use full synthetic oil! I have been using Mobil 1 in my past 4 trucks all hade over 200,000 miles and no leaks,burning oil ect. The engine will outlast the truck body ect.

Not sure who this is directed at, but I'll likely be changing out the oil early as the first oil in the engine is most likely to have wear metals, sillica from casting, and random other bits of the build process in it. It's also Motorcraft Synthetic Blend, which I would like to swap out for a premium full synthetic before the 5K mark.

Lucas is my favorite break in oil for motorcycles...that is Lucas “break in” oil..and ford uses a synthetic blend..

Dunno, have you seen the underside of the Ford Focus? no fewer than 9 torx fasteners of varying length so that you can get at the oil drain and filter. I'll never be taking my truck to the dealer for oil though, I've had too much trouble with them in the past putting in wrong amounts of oil, wrong type of oil, breaking stuff and not telling me, etc. Not worth it. I'll buy my own oil and keep my own records.
