My rears are squeaking with only 14k miles. Seems to have worn fast?

Thanks for making this thread. I'll be checking it for any tips I can get when I take a look at the brakes. I'm familiar with the piston retracting tool from my Mustang days so it doesn't look like it'll be that tricky to work on.

I may actually only have 16,242 miles. My Ford Pass app says 19,242 and the email I just got from Ford with my vehicle report is reading 16,242.
You're replacing brakes at less than 20,000 miles? Are you upgrading?

That is a SHOCKING amount of wear. I replaced my rears at 70,000 miles.
Yep! I bought my truck with 12,000 miles on it, and there are some mild signs that she may have had a fun life prior to me getting her. You should see the bumps stops! (or really, what is left of them!)

I mean, I have fun with mine, too. That's WILD wear. Well, hopefully the next set lasts long enough for you to get out of the shop before they need replacing...

Jeez John, are you sure you didn’t drive to New Jersey and back with the hand brake on? ?

Whats special about the tool over a c clamp????
The piston is basically threaded and must me screwed in like a really big bolt. It takes a lot of effort, the "bolt" has no head on it except a couple slots, and you have to press AND turn at the same time.

[Auto Parts Store Name Here] will have the tool you need to do the job and it's a "free" rental (must deposit the value of the tool).

It IS possible to do it with a pair of pliers but it SUCKS. I had already dived into the job and my truck was apart when I realized my mistake.

GET THE TOOL

I remember being a little kid and "helping" my dad work on the cars, and a particular incident where he was trying to turn in a piston with a C-clamp and a screw driver used as a lever bar to turn it as he compressed it. I'll just skip to the end of the story here: a couple hours later he had to go next door to the neighbors and apologize for the language and for throwing a tool that had landed in their driveway. ? ? ? ?

Havent changed Ranger pads yet. On other vehicles ive never used the tool for the screw in piston, just the backside of a prybar to screw it in while pushing.

To be clear, I probably have enough pad life left to last another 3000 to 5000 miles, but with the noises I'm getting and the amount of wear I'm seeing, I'm probably being a little proactive.

Yeah, man. That seems like a damn good idea. I'm just amazed.

I bought mine with 12,500 miles on it and the brakes have been squeaking since I got it. I'm really curious as to what I'll find once I get the wheels off and can take a closer look.
