What gear is below 1? Mine shifts to it. Violent shift going uphill.

I have a 100ft long 12° angle driveway. Think of that as fairly steep. When I come home, I lock out all the gears except first. Halfway up the driveway, the truck jolts pretty darn violently the continues on. Its like the truck is in 2nd and shifts VERY harshly to first except its already in first.

This cannot be good for the trans. 1800mi.

I know exactly what you are talking about. It's hard to describe to other people (especially service advisors) but my particular truck does not like stopping and going on steep inclines. It's especially bad while towing. Generously lubing the slip joint helped a bit, but it is still there, which has led me to believe it is a symptom of drivetrain slop and the two-piece driveshaft. I would like to take a tech for a ride up an incline to hear their thoughts, but the dealerships around me aren't near anything steep enough to recreate it.

What happens if you just leave it in drive?

It's the torque converter unlocking, I know in my diesel Raptor with the 10 speed, the unlocking of the converter at low speed can be quite abrupt.

Locking it into first gear is definitely making it rough, my 10 speed does exactly this when I drive in my parking garage locked in first, as the torque converter lockup clutch engages at higher RPM. If I leave it in drive and free to do what it wants, the transmission keeps second before downshifting into first with the torque converter unlocked. Much smoother.

Are you in 4x4 low range? If so, you should put in manual mode and use the gear selector switch to force it from 2nd gear to first. The transmission defaults to 2nd gear when you put in 4x4 low range. Not sure why Ford did that as every time I have selected low range, I needed 1st gear by default.

You're the first person to be able to clearly explain this. I shift manually when off-road and was wondering why it was so harsh sometimes. Many thanks.

I have a drive of similar length, but 14 degrees. Mine is loose gravel, so I use 4wd (or locker) to avoid spinning, but I just put’er in drive and go. No need to lock the the truck in first gear.

These trucks have a feature where it will hold the brakes for a few seconds on an incline if you stop. Nice when a trailer is attached to not roll back

Seems like your situation is continuous motion so not sure if it is the feature I described or something else entirely

Read it and weep or give thanks for another fuel saving measure , the 10 sp torque converter is different from past versions, " Remember, this unit spends more time in lockup mode than it does in torque converter mode. "

https://gearsmagazine.com/magazine/fords-latest-torque-converter-has-things-a-bit-backward/

from the above article the tranny uses a different type of damper than Damper Dave brazenly sells on here :

LARGE DAMPER ASSEMBLY

Do you have the tow option on yours? I found with mine use tow and lockout everything down to 2nd gear. Then go. I don’t have violent shifts or jerks doing it that way.

Yeah if I leave it alone, it likes to keep 2nd then at the crest of the driveway at the end, it will sometimes harshly shift into 1st. I'm locking gears out and messing with it to try and find the best and friendliest option for the transmission.

No. Regular 2wd mode.

14° gravel is no joke. Guess you had to get the 4WD huh?!

Yes I do. Yeah I might try locking all out except 2 and 1 and see how that goes. The transmission in this thing is so busy and that makes me nervous about long term reliability. I'm just trying to do little things so make it last longer like figuring out which way it needs to be setup so it doesn't shift violently every time I come home.

In honesty it a total different approach to how you drove before. I had to relearn with this one and then it behaves like I want it to.
