I don't think you'll see it finished, even if you are immortal. lol
They certainly seem to be slow walking progress there.. sometimes the idea sells better than the end product.. It’s like “Dave’s Rug Shop” meaning if he sells his only rug then what… a great start and concept but???

Mount Rushmore is absolutely exquisite with the engineering and purpose of getting the job done!!! AND with old school technology.. Amazing!!
It really is Andy. When you're standing there and looking at what it took to do this back then it's amazing how they did it without any of todays technology. These guys were really craftsman back then!

? I always wondered what was behind those faces. Thanks now I know. ?

But wait. You left out the most important part:
Does he have a tailgate damper, and if not, did you sell him one?
lol Of course I asked him and he didn't even know what a damper was. :surprised: That's when I told him about the forum and if he joined I'd send him the link. lol The expression on his face when I showed him mine was priceless though. ?

Now the whole reason we made this trip was to see Mt Rushmore. Coming to the end of Custer State Park the last tunnel you go through gives you your first view of it. I was glad there was very little traffic through there today as we had time to stop in the middle of it and have an unobstructed view. I'm still at a loss for words.

Most people don't know it, but Mt Rushmore is not technically finished either. If you look at the models that were built for the vision, it never got completely done. It still amazes me what did get accomplished. If you look at Crazy Horse, it is incredible how much rock they've removed from that mountain - and still have a VERY LONG way to go.

BTW….I was wrong about the cold spell, we are currently in the grip of a heatwave….I’ve never seen it this hot, this early in the summer…but my database for Colorado is small. Stay cool my friend….

That looks really good Mark! Yeah it was just starting to heat up there as we were leaving Durango on Wednesday, I saw a few days hitting the 90's. Still not to bad seeing as the nights cool off there where in AZ it just stays hot. Chris @Chris M had text me yesterday saying it was 116 there! ? Glad to be In the Black Hills where it's been really nice in the upper 70's. Hopefully it cools off some by next Thursday but who knows the way the weather is it could still snow.?

This brings back some great memories. I travelled through SD and all the other gambling states (name one, I’ve been to all its casinos) when I worked for a slot machine manufacturer. Deadwood was certainly on my list with all its tiny “casinos”. I’m also a huge fan of Dances With Wolves, so I had to see SD. I did some mountain biking in the National Grasslands near Wall and when I was riding in the Black Hills, I came around the back side of the monument while exploring some old mining trails. I visited the monument in the proper way and was surprised at how close you could get to it from the park - thanks for sharing Dave - that was one of my favourite business trips so it was nice to see these pics.

We were both kind of beat from everything we did yesterday so today we just went to Bear Mountain. It's just a 15 mile fire road that brings you up to a 7,100' lookout of the Black Hills. It's a fairly flat road that any vehicle can easily make it up and there's a lot of n
ice pull out areas to either camp or just pull off and have lunch and enjoy the cool weather and views.

If you're on 16/385 it's the left turn onto Medicine Mountain Rd about a half mile before you get to Crazy Horse. From there just follow the signs all the way to the top. There are many other roads you can continue on from there.

After that we went back down to the town of Keystone which is at the base of Mt Rushmore. We just stopped there for dinner last night and didn't get a chance to look around. Annie can shop like it's her job so of course we had to go back and buy more stuff. I might need a trailer to haul all this stuff home.

Sounds like a great time you had doing that Duke! That must have been a great experience mountain biking down the back side of the monument.

We're hoping to go up to Deadwood/Spearfish on Wednesday and check out the area up there. They're having Wild Bill Days from 6/15-6/18 and it should be fun to check that out. Also Brian @BS67 had recommended a place to eat called Sanfords so we'd like to check that out too.
