Update on Updating Sync

For some reason it worked today. Whooppie!!!! I had a 1.5 hour drive and after I got going I put in the USB expecting the same and it started updating. I now have build 23088. I used Cyan Labs and updates the maps as well. What an easy method when it works.

I know there is a newer version on Cyan Labs and it just says voice update. Don't know if I need this. I'm happy to get done what I did. Sure wish I knew why it wasn't working before.

I previously used the Cyan Labs USB update to leapfrog a couple SYNC versions, then updated from there over Wi-Fi. This morning I saw a notice on the main screen my SYNC version had been updated again.

I can't update my Sync at all. Mine came with out-of-date maps that even Ford said I shouldn't have; but the Sync Navigation site kept telling me my 2023 was built prior to 2010, so it wasn't eligible for map updates. Ford ITV told me to go to my dealership and have them update my maps, however the dealership couldn't update the maps through their FDRS system because it kept telling them that I had the most current maps installed. Even my service tech wasn't sure how a 2023 shipped with maps that were so out of date. Ford's ITV Escalation Team then decided that it was a Ford server issue (that now may, or may not, be fixed). Ford eventually sent me the NA 2 21 maps on a USB drive which updated correctly, and then I was able to download the NA 2 22 maps the day they released. But after the 36 days since I installed them, the Sync Navigation site still seems to think that I never updated to NA 2 22.

At the same time, when they were pushing out v3.4.2251 software, my truck never once reported a software update as being available, and the Ford Sync site continuously reported my software as being up-to-date. Now with v3.4.23188 being pushed out, both my Ranger and the Ford Sync site insist that my truck has the "SYNC Current Version". Nope. Once again Ford directed me to my dealership to have them update the software, and once again FDRS reported that my Ranger has the most current software installed in all modules. Nope. Tech actually had to manually update the ABS module to clear a TMS fault. And he was quite aware of Sync v3.4.23188 and the fact my truck didn't have it.

Called Ford back and they told me to call the dealership back and tell them to update my Ranger with the UUU system and then have them open a ticket through the TAC. I'm kind of getting the impression that either my 2023 Ranger refuses to talk to Ford, or the Ford servers are refusing to acknowledge the existence of my Ranger (that they claim was built prior to 2010). Obviously we need a communications therapist to work things out here.

Lessons learned: I really have no idea of why the ABS module controls the Terrain Management System, and when the TMS faults out not only do you loose Terrain Management, you totally loose the ability to switch into 4WD. That could be bad in the winter. I think I'm really missing manual locking hubs right about now... Also, why was routing the Ranger's tail lights through the Infotainment System considered a good idea???

The Navigation web site will never really tell you if you are up to date. It only knows if you have already downloaded or ordered the currently available version. After you download the maps, the site will still give you the opportunity to buy it on a USB and the free download option should be gone. Then, if you do need to re-download the same version, you need to have the confirmation email they sent at the time of the original order. That email has the link to re-download what you already had. So, don't waste your time looking at the Navigation web site anymore until the next update comes out (annually).

As far as why they are not offering you the current Sync version, I have no idea and the In-Vehicle team should be able to explain why. If I were having your issue, I'd go get 23188 from Cyan Labs (and be sure to follow their instructions exactly). Of course, since that is 'not supported' you are doing it at your own risk.

I don't know exactly when (what Sync version or just after a certain date), but after a update, you had to upload a file from the jump drive to let Ford know the update had been done. NOW, they "automatically" (at the end of the install) notify Ford it has been done. Wondering if with your situation, if the manual notify is still in play???

As to the TMS affecting ABS, it kinda makes sense as TMS is using the ABS to apply the brakes at any of the four wheels as needed. Sort of surprised that the "limp mode" concept related to the three systems (ABS, 4x4 and TMS) that ABS and 4x4 would have a higher priority such that if TMS is having issues, shut it down and leave ABS and 4x4 alone. ABS is a DOT safety requirement while TMS is optional. Systems integration run amuck.

Unfortunately you have to be able to download the software package from the Ford server to your USB drive in order to install the software to your vehicle and create the .XML file to upload back to Ford. I am getting neither a manual, nor an automatic, notification; the Ford server is simply reporting that Sync v 3.4.21194 is the "SYNC Current Version", which we know to be false. The fact that both I, and the dealership's Ford Diagnostic & Repair System, are being informed that there is no new software available is pretty indicative of a software error, most likely within Ford's servers.

I to have a 2023 built in June of 2023, the first time I looked up my vin, it also said mine was built before 2010. Ford did let me download the new maps but claims my sync is also up to date with 22251 which it came with. I did the chat thing on their website about a week after 23188 came out and the person in the chat said it's only been out a week at that time and it will get to your vehicle. I think Ford just has a problem keeping their computer systems updated with current information on the products they make and supposedly service.

Ford did let me download the new maps but claims my sync is also up to date with 22251 which it came with. I did the chat thing on their website about a week after 23188 came out and the person in the chat said it's only been out a week at that time and it will get to your vehicle. I think Ford just has a problem keeping their computer systems updated with current information on the products they make and supposedly service.

I would agree with you, except mine is still at version 3.4.21194 and it never even saw the 22251 update much less the new 23188 update. According to Ford, mine was "supposedly" shipped with the NA 2 21 maps and sync 3.4.22200, instead it had NA 2 20 and 21194; I had to send Ford a picture to prove it. The fact that Ford is sending me to the dealership to get it updated and the dealership is not able to update it either is what I am finding troublesome, especially since this has been ongoing on for 7 months now. Kind of gives new insight to the old adage that technology usually causes more problems than it solves.

Cyanlabs updater would most likely work but if something went wrong Ford would most likely try to deny the warranty. Did the dealership actually try to apply the update with a USB install, or were they just told it wasn't eligible by your Vin number? I still think it's just a matter of Ford keeping the information for all vehicle Vin numbers updated on their servers.

Just for laughs I typed in the vin number from my last vehicle on Fords website and was offered the 3.4.23188 update, I did not download the file because I didn't want whoever is driving that vehicle now to not be able to get the update. Fords system for keeping track of this stuff is a mess.

Yeah, its mainly a question of just how bad...

Perhaps its a good thing Farley stole Peter Stern from Apple to head up the newly formed Ford Integrated Services division. Software people actually overseeing a software division, whoda thought?

Wish mine would auto-update, but I'd settle for being able to load it from a USB. Actually, I just wish Ford would fix their systems, but I think world peace is probably more likely to happen first.
