Ben, just go thru the Towing section threads about what some of us are towing....you will be surprised at what we tow with our Rangers.
It's kind of ironic that most of the tranny failures are from those who are always using their trucks solo while I don't recall any of us who tow having a failure. Not to say it hasn't happened, I just don't recall any.
Maybe I should hook up my trailer and tow around my mower all the time.

I have a 14 x 7 trailer with a Badboy lawn mower it is the same as I posted when I tow it it is only the TT that weights about 4200 to 4500 pending on how much stuff is in it. The utility trailer is nothing to the trans.

Well my 60" Toro Z has to weigh something. But I was joking anyway.

Having read through the last few posts concerning pulling a trailer, and the testing in the Australian outback and Morocco successfully, in contrast to my 12,000 miles travels in a warm wet climate (90F+ temps with 90+% humidity) while experimenting with gas mileage, and having severe transmission troubles, gives pause.

I performed a great deal of slow acceleration testing, never exceeding 2K RPMs, and long coasting when coming to a stop. These tests were primarily over night into the early morning hours when traffic was nonexistent. I managed up to 28.6 mpg on several of these trips.

Is it possible that the torque converter is so poorly designed as to raise temps on extremely slow acceleration? I have a hard time believing this. But the more I think about the correlation...

Anyway, one last data point on fuel economy. My MPG dropped to the low 20's from 24-25 MPG range about 18 months ago. I changed the plugs to get ahead of the water in plug 4 issue, and since then I am back to my 24.5 mpg average. I having been simply driving the truck normally since those long trips where I tested for high pas mileage.

As always... correlation does not equal causation. Skid marks don't cause accidents (usually )

I have absolutely no issue with the MPGs on my truck even with a3.5 lift and 33" tires I get 22 to 24 mpg. I have had not issues with my trans (he says while banging hard on the wooden cabinet).

My only thoughts is prevention and how I can help myself and others.

Well one more trip with the trailer in the books trans stayed below 220 and coolant temps around the same only spiking one time to 226 or 7 during hard acceleration. These spikes came down in less than 5 mins. I did keep my speed at and below 65 with 55 most of the time. I think the coolant temps worry me more I am puzzled as to why they get so hot and worry in long trip with the possibility of having the engine over heat.

I have a question to those that tow what temps are you seeing while towing? Ambient temps were around 90 to 94 through the trip, I did notice that the "Dummy light never passed the 1/2 way mark that does seem strange to me.

Here’s a torque pro app screenshot at the end of a recent 70 mile tow with our 6000 lb travel trailer. A few hills and around the low 80’s air temperature. Gives current info but also displays peaks during the trip.

I’ve only seen consistently over 212 when towing 17% grade up and down outside Big Bend. Trailer is 4650lbs. 7x8 frontal area.

Exactly I expected to see high trans temps it is the coolant temps that puzzle me know I am not sure why I am seeing temps this high when towing. the trailer is total length of 22' x8' and around 4200 to 4300. The hills I am speaking of are small in comparison to most of what others would see. These are in East Texas around Huntsville. I am sure if I had to do 65 for a extended period it would overheat. I have 68 thousand miles on the truck and have not change the coolant but was planning at 75 thousand miles. The recommended change is 100,000 I really don't want to wait that long, with that said nothing has changed unless somehow I got air in they system.

I just got back from a quick run into town and back...maybe 20 miles. Outside temps are around 92-95.
Temps are the norm for solo (not towing) in hot weather.....
When towing our travel trailer it's hit 210-220 for trans and 205-215 coolant on hot days running up grades...especially long ones, but cools down quickly when cresting.
Nothing to worry about....

Funny I never see trans temps that high unless I am pulling but I do see coolant temps higher don't know what the outside temp is where you are but he right now we are staying in the low 90s. Normally I see trans temps around or less than your coolant temps just driving around.

I noticed the last time riding about 60 miles of trails that the transmission was consistently running around 205 ish. 65 F air temperatures and really slow going. Mostly 1st and 2nd gear.
