Tranmission Failure

I just got word from the repair shop. The transmission (10R80) on my 2019 Ranger is toast. It just passed 123,000Km or 76,000 miles. I've never towed with this small truck and basically drive it only on weekends and pretty gently at that. I figured I'd get a lot more milage out of it than that. I've gotten three times as much wear out of other trucks in the past. Is this normal for the 10R80?

unfortunately not unheard of. many make it well past the 100k miles point before failure, many others don't.

the 2019 10R80 didn't get the updated parts that arrived in 2022/2023. the CDF drum got updated and then i think there was a bearing or sleeve or something that also got updated. there are weaknesses in the throttle body design that still haven't been addressed (supposedly) and can cause issues on even a brand new 10R80 -- though the 2024+ F-150s with the 10R80 appear to be doing much better with the aforementioned updates.

6th gen rangers abandoned the 10R80 and went to a 10R60 that also appears to be doing much better.

i also have a 2019 ranger like you. lately it has been misbehaving a lot more (96k miles). sorry to hear that this one bit you. hopefully you have some kind of powertrain warranty coverage. it's a good truck! the transmission just sucks nuggets.

I just had a third transmission installed on my 2019 and I’ve only got 112k miles. I’m just so glad I got an extended warranty with this one as it saved my butt for both replacements. Guaranteed that company can’t wait for me to hit 117k miles to be done with me lol

Unfortunately, it happens too often.
If it's not under any warranty, find a reputable transmission shop for repairs. It'll cost half of what Ford will charge.

Yes I would say it’s normal if not expected. My 2021 was rebuilt @36k and started showing the same symptoms @38k. Like you, I drove gently, never towed, and never got close to maxing out the payload. I sold it right before powertrain warranty expired this past may. I believe I was @42k and it was pretty bad. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to sell it. I would encourage you to get a different vehicle if you get a new transmission. Odds are it will happen again. People on here have had it rebuilt multiple times and still have issues.

Pretty much every truck made around 2019/20 and newer is a crap shoot. Modern vehicles are junk. When the trans explodes on mine I’ll be looking for a low mileage truck no newer than 2017-ish.

Nope they are having engine problems. Ford=bad trans, GM=bad engine. They're are no quality trucks available anymore.

Not unheard of or unexpected with these trucks, the pre-2022 10r80 transmissions are a crap shoot. My wife’s ranger needed a new transmission last year and her truck only had 30-40k miles on it. Don’t remember the exact mileage. Mine has been acting up for a while now, I have just over 75k miles on mine. The transmission is the Achilles heel with the 5g rangers.

Chevy is notorious for electrical problems too. My stepdad and brother are both diehard Chevy guys, both of their trucks have already been to the shop multiple times for various issues with the electronics. A few months ago, my brother was taking a 14 hour road trip out of state and his radiator exploded on the highway… He has a newer Colorado, I think it’s a 22 or 23.

Like you said, the quality in trucks has really gone downhill over the last 5 or so years. No matter what manufacturer you go with, they all have their issues.

Ford and Chevy/GM collaborated on the transmission. So, it's a crap with them also.
But, with GM, if you have engine problems, they will tell you to use thicker oil. That will get you to the end of the warranty.

Dont matter if you drive it or it sits
Dont matter if you tow with it or you tow it
FFS it dont even matter if you change the oil
there is a percentage of failure rate, you are either gonna be in it or you won the percentage lotto
rode hard and put away wet just drive it till the wheels fall off
