When using tow mode (towing 3500 lb camper)the rpms seem to get really high going down a steep grade. I usually begin breaking at 3500 to 4000 rpms. Is this to be expected and what do you experience?

Thanks

Mine will rev up to something like that when engine braking. When I manually shift to engine brake (in S mode), I tend to stay below about 4,000 rpms.

I have a 4620lbs trailer (weighed) and see 4000 once in a while. Typically closer to 3500. This is in Tow/Haul.

Yep, mine does the same. Like a diesel truck, really cool! Only in tow/haul mode though. Its normal. Once you tow a lot more, youll see what an awesome little truck the Ranger can be

Tow/haul mode features enhanced engine braking to help you better slow trailers/ heavy loads. This a smaller, mild compression engine, so the truck will downshift so that the engine braking provides more of an effect on the drive wheels. If you've ever driven a manual vehicle, you know engine braking is much more pronounced in lower gears than higher. The trucks tow/haul mode is simply capitalizing on this phenomena to help slow you down.

The one place that the "no replacement for displacement" axiom really applies is engine braking.
Our little four banger can only do so much.

mine does it and I haven't towed anything, I just run tow mode full time, some steep hills, it will downshift and chirp the tires ! Does sound like it's revving a little high but these trucks are ment to be drivin like dirt bikes , imo...

I hope excessive engine braking does not cause your engine to break....

Seriously though, let it sign and help you slow down. It is doing its job.
