$8100 below MSRP does sound tempting. What are the dealer fees? I just had my Ford dealer ask if I would like to trade my 2021 FX4 in on a new one. I didn't even bother to ask what they had in mind. I just told him NO!
I’ve gotten six offers from the dealership to buy mine. NOPE.!!!!

That's exactly what I was starting to reply then saw your pop up. There was a few sporadic incidents but nothing really major until Sids blew up a couple years ago.

I think it was Shawn @ctechbob who broke down the differences/similarities of both these transmissions in another post. I thought I remember him saying that while the 10R60 is a little better they still have several similarities. Basically it's not if something will happen it's when. I may be wrong but hopefully he can clear this up better for you.
All the R60 is is a lighter duty version of the R80. The valve bodies are the same and still the same old busted born to wear out design.

To be fair, the R80 in the Ranger probably should have been called an R70 or something as it is missing a few clutch disks compared to a 'real' R80.

I gotta wonder how much Ford actually saved on tooling up the couple specialty parts to go in there instead of just using a regular R80 in the first place.

But then again...Ford doing Ford things.

It is a bummer; but every time I have a clunky downshift and I have this thought, I try to remind myself the cost of a transmission vs a new auto loan.

Consider that most 6g's are still relatively low mileage compared to the 5g's. I feel like the transmission talk has ramped up during my time with this group and I joined when I bought my truck in late 2022. How was the forum temperature, for those that have been here since day 1, 2019-2022? I would imagine far less transmission issue threads popped up in the early years, but I was not here, so could be completely wrong.
I’m in the same boat! $6-7 grand for a new transmission OR a new truck payment… I’m already paying off the wife’s ranger at $650/month. I don’t think I want to commit to another vehicle payment at the moment.

I will never have another car payment whether I keep my 5G or get something newer. That said, I have weighed in the potential for having to fork out for a new transmission, and the rental car while it's being fixed.

Now I don't need a new truck, and mine is set up nicely, but there is a new 2025 Lariat 2.7L on a local dealer lot for $8100 below MSRP. The thought of having the more reliable transmission and the smooth, proven V6 is very tempting.
If you want it get it! Life's to short not to get what you want!

That's my struggle, do I want it or not. And do I want to start customizing all over again. Not that I have a ton of money in my 5G, but I know there would probably something I would want to change. Starting with spray-in bed liner or bed mat, tonneau cover etc. Other than that it's pretty loaded.

As they say enjoy life spending the kids inheritance. We legally gave our brand new house to our son, but still ours to come back to after traveling. Other then that we will probably spend our savings before we leave this world. He is left with a nice house free and clear only yearly taxes and insurance.

Do what I do and give it a week. Usually by then if I still have the "urge" I'll start looking into it more seriously then. Sometimes it's just a passing thought that sounds good "Oh, look at that shiny new Ranger" then the wheels start turning. Usually it goes away and I'm off looking for something else to buy. lol

Yeah, I agree. I'm quoting Dad again lol. He calls it "window shopping."

If you want a new truck, go buy it. You now have the OTD price for the new Lariat so what do you think you will get for your 2021 Ranger? That is the figure I would be looking at.

If you keep you 2021 Ranger, and the transmission goes, you will be paying cash, and you will have options. You will definitely have the option of private garage or the dealer. You will also have rebuild options that the warranty may prevent. In other words, you may have a rebuild that is done correctly rather them replacing certain parts. Last your repair time will be way faster than any of us with the warranty so the rental car cost may only be 3 to 4 days.

Later this year the extended warranty runs out on my wife's Mercedes GLC 300. If I go by dealer repair rates, it may make sense to upgrade to a new car. German cars can be very expensive to repair and a $4-$5k repair is not uncommon at a dealer. If I use private garage rates, I'll be looking at @ 65% of what the dealer will charge. In this case, it is probably better to keep the car and have an emergency fund to cover repairs. If I can get away with @ $2500/year in repairs and maintenance say over the next 5 years, I'll keep it. I would probably lose close to $12,500 in one year in depreciation on a new GLC 300.
