I did search for this one and I 'may' have found a 10R80 thread that hasn't been mentioned before. A co-workers ranger is in the CDF death spiral but we both agree that we don't particularly trust a dealership, nor should he pay their rates.

Does anyone have a lead or recommendation on quality rebuilt 10R80's for the Ranger specifically? Looking for some non-Ford dealership options but almost all of them seem specific to the F150.

Swapping a trans is work I don't want to pay a dealership for and I'd be more confident with a reputable company that all of the fixes were handled correctly rather than old parts designs being shoved right back in.

A. No old parts designs are being put back in at dealerships.
B. If you have a 4x4 you can buy a brand new with all the updates transmission from several different Ford outlets online for around $5000.00
C. Independent shops are putting Ford oem updated parts in their products

Just buy new from ford. Cheaper and zero reused parts. Not a terrible install then.

So you would have to reuse your old valve body, oil pump and torque converter to make it comparable to the Ford unit. Add in that there’s no warranty on the Cherry Bomb and it’s a hard no for the investment.
None of those are unreliable parts with design deficiencies, nor are they difficult or expensive to change. Luckily it's not your (or my) money I'm spending.

Some of you guys trust and care more about Ford's parts department more than most Ford employees I work with. :giggle:

I'm not sure when supporting small business in lieu of mega corporation became out of favor.

This cherrybomb assembly looks perfect for my co-worker!

And it's less than half the price of a Ford trans.
That is a great option for me if my CDF drum fails, does anyone know how much a factory Ford CDF drum and clutch plates cost? I'm a retired GM transmission tech. and am not afraid of tearing into my trans when it goes out.

It’s not a matter of caring or not wanting to support small business. It’s a matter of getting the best out of your investment. The no warranty seals it for me. The partial fix of problems ( valve bodies are a huge 10R80 issue) double seals it for me. So if you do an apples for apples comparison the $5K is a better investment. Plus you’re still getting OEM updated parts in the partial fix.

Was back at my hometown Ford dealer a couple of weeks ago. He had a F-150 on the rack replacing the transmission. I asked about the drum and valve body. He indicated initially he cleaned the valve body but the tolerances are so close there were problems afterwards. Told me all he does now is remove the transmission replace it with a factory rebuild. Never even opens one up. Factory rebuilds are not in any way similar to a local repair which typically replaces clutches, drum, and valve body. A factory rebuild basically "guts" all the parts, replacing them with the latests stuff. He also indicated he hasn't seen any of the rebuilds come back with failures ...yet.

Cumulative distribution function.

Most of us have run quite a few simulations calculating the probability of 10r80 disaster. It increases by 15% with excess hand wringing and dread posting about tranny issues.

Lol
Thanks
I have 40k on my 2019 scab. Owned it for 1 1/2 years, since 30k. No tranny trouble. Serial number about 100
I just towed a box trailer, weighing 6500, 2000 miles. Did great.
