I'm a bit suspicious of that explanation from someone who's getting free / subsidized equipment for their truck due to their position as a writer for Outside.You're just talking about two different tiers of quality. 2.0 is Fox's entry level shock. A small upgrade in control and better ability to resist overheat than stock.
Icon's Stage 2 setup is more expensive for a reason. More travel, larger, nicer pistons, valves, etc. If you're dropping a couple grand (with install) anyways, might as well get something that's going to transform the truck's ride an handling, not just offer a mild improvement.
What you've said basically boils down to, "It's more expensive so it must be better."
