So I accidentally double gasketed the oil filter while changing the oil on Shelly today, I got it shut off in time so no engine damage, what's the best way to clean all the excess oil that coated the bottom of the engine? I wiped it down as best I could but I'm sure there's still a bunch I couldn't get to. Just let it burn off?

Yeah i've done that... i ended up running it through a few car washes, but mostly just let it do its thing

Edit: i would get crazy with the brake clean to try and get as much out as you can, put a couple of those oil absorbing diapers underneath and just go crazy.

I'll grab some brake clean and give it a shot. There's even oil droplets on the engine cover, at least I know I won't have to worry about rust

Well, that's one mistake you will never do again.
Always check old filter for the gasket and wipe mounting surface on the engine side to ensure mating surface is clean.

Have I done this exact same thing before - YES, years ago and have not done it since.

I'd recommend you start with Simple Green and work your way up to brake cleaner if you happen to find some that managed to get caked on somehow. It's fresh oil - simple green should blast it right off.

Purple power etches aluminum - don't use that.

Happens to the best of us, I've done it myself, someone comes downstairs, distracts you at the wrong time, and you forget to check the old filter. Mine actually lasted half a day before the double seal blew out, luckily shut down the engine before any damage.

That's probably about the only good thing that I can say about the Euro style plastic cartridge type filter on my diesel Ranger, the seal is an O ring on the actual housing, fits in a groove on the housing at the end of the external thread, and comes out with housing, can't leave it behind. Otherwise it's a messy, fiddly, filter to change, that simply relies on friction to seal the two filter element ends.

First time I've heard of "double gasketing"...what is that?

It's when you don't notice this and the gasket is still stuck to the truck. You put a new filter on and gasket + gasket surprisingly = not a gasket.

Wow! Thankfully, I've never done this...

Is that's why he's now an X? Or was it a general trend.
She was unlucky, I only reason think I managed to get away with it for a couple of hours was because on that particular filter the seal was quite wide and flat, which when done up tight still sealed reasonably well, had it had been one of those thin round profile ones around the very outside, almost like an O ring, probably wouldn't have gone far at all.
