Any thoughts on changing oil after first 500 miles. Break in, wear in, for new engine. Any thoughts or just wait until I hit 5000.

Nah, too soon. The filter will catch any fresh metal shavings anyway. My system has always been to do the first oil change at 2500 miles, again at 5000 miles, and every 5000 after that. I put 212,000 miles on my old Sport Trac and still ran like new and didn't burn a drop of oil. Motorcraft filter, Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30.

You're going to get all sorts of opinions as opinions are like, well you know. ;) So here's mine. I changed mine at 3,000 and then every 5,000 after that. Sure it says 10,000 but with our heat out here and having a tune and driving it hard at times I feel better doing it. Am I wasting money, probably but it's the cheap insurance just like I change my air filter every 10,000. I would do whatever you feel comfortable doing and for Gods sake do not smell your oil!?

My shavings sat on the bottom of the pan. for one year with no problems. Did your shavings do different? Those habanero pepper seeds I assume were stopped by the pickup screen. :D

Machining and assembly and tolerances are a lot better than they were 40 years ago and you don't have to change break-in oil at 500 miles like you used to. That being said, when I changed the transfer case lube on my other trucks at 30,000 miles it drained out like tar and wasn't relatively clean until the 90,000 mile change.

1st world problems. All you're doing is replacing good oil with fresh oil.

To each his own I wanted to change to Full Synthetic. I also wanted to view the oil that was in the engine after initial breakin. It was pretty dark and not consistent in color. Either way it's my truck and feel better informed as to its internal condition.
