Hmmm, I haven't posted in this thread in a while so I thought I'd dig something out of my past and chat about it. Here we go, a story of 2 Ninja 1000's. One made 172 hp on the dyno, and the other, I don't know maybe 125 hp. One hurt my back and wrists after a while on the road but felt pretty good at the track. The other only saw the road but I could go for a few hours easy. One hit about 180 on the front straight at Road America. The other I don't think I ever drove faster than 90.

After the 2nd 1000, something became clear to me. I guess I don't really like large inline 4 motorcycles. Not enough personality for me. I prefer smaller motorcycles, and I prefer twins, thumpers and triples. And the 300 race bike in the background - I had more fun on that than both of the the liter bikes combined. I never owned another 4 cylinder bike again.

I like my street glide other than for running around town on because of the weight. If I owned a different brand I would look at the Ducati Diavel or a retro looking Triumph. The Diavel is the only Ducati my 57 year old back could handle.

I think I posted my current Thruxton R somewhere earlier in this thread. Still love the bike! Bikes come and go in my garage but some tend to stay longer than others when they make a special connection with me. The Diavel is cool (as was the Monster I owned for a while but sold before it needed belt and valve maintenance - hahah) but I think I would take the new Triumph Rocket 3 R over it. Even though I just professed my dislike for big bikes.

Great thread guys!, I started off in the 70s as a kid riding my cousins honda 50s and xr75s, in the 80s I had some dirt bikes, a YZ125 and then a CR125. first street bike in the late 80s was a Yamaho 550 maxim(dog) after that I was off bikes for a while focusing on cars and life.

Got back into it about 15 years ago as a dual sport guy, which is a great cross between dirt and street for me. First was a DRZ400, the Suzuki version of Rhinos KLX, after a few years on that I was travelling more and further so I moved up to a DR650, had an 08 that I put 65,000km on and I currently have a 2016 with around 50,000 on it.

In summer of 2021 I got invited on a couple week, several thousnd km trip that I could have done on the DR, but Id had a hankerin for a larger twin cylinder that still had some dirt chops, enter the Yamaha Tenere 700, its and awesome bike! Did the James Bay hwy to Northern Quebec last summer, 10 days and just over 4000km, perfect bike for that.

Current rides
The Mighty DR, bush pig, my "dirt bike" lol

Last year at Theodore Roosevelt National Park Medora, ND. Hope to go back there on my way to Glacier, Yellowstone, & Greand Teton National Parks. That's my 2017 Suzuki DL 650, D'Elle. I use that handy grey "dolly" to move the bike across timezones:

Ironically, picture taken during a 6 year timeframe in my life when I never rode on the streets. Now that I'm retired from the racetrack and only riding on streets, I'm terrified. People are going in two different directions! Grandmas can't see over their steering wheels! Everyone's on their phones!

Today I putt around with my eyes wide open like huge circles and afraid to blink. Does it seem strange to anyone that I felt safer on the racetrack?

It puts everything in a different perspective.

Back in the 80s, I worked as a corner worker for Central Road Racing Association, during races held at Brainerd International Raceway. Pretty cool. Show up at the track, register as a corner worker, and get free admission & camping. I got to ride my KZ to the corner I was assigned, taking the liberty of riding a lap+ to get there. I developed great respect for the racers, having been out on the track myself. Great bunch. They, too, viewed the track as being as safe or safer than the street. On track not only is everybody going one way, but each rider knows and expects those around them to ride inches away. They learn who takes a wide line where, who brakes really early or late etc and use this knowledge to put their bike in the best position for the moment.

No I get it and one reason I stoped riding on the streets. Everyone now is so preoccupied with their darn phones and/or weaving in and out of traffic it wasn't much fun for me anymore. When I first started riding my friend told me you'll have days where you're so tired and drained mentally. At first I didn't know what the heck he was talking about but then it made sense. You're concentrating so much on everyone else and what's around you that it's mentally draining. I still kept my motorcycle license and there are times I wish I still had a bike because we have some really nice areas to ride out here. Maybe one day I'll get another one but it's not high on the list right now.
