It's a fair question to ask. My reasoning for ordering a '22 over a '23:

- The Wait. Do we even know when the '23s will be available to order? Wouldn't take delivery until mid/late 2023/early 2024 I bet. That's if Ford has no issues releasing on time.
- The Price. The base price of the Ranger will go up. Packages and options will also increase. Guaranteed.
- The bugs. A new model change comes bugs. Seeing what others are going through with the Bronco/Sport, no thanks.
- Shortages. Think this "chip shortage" will end overnight? Not taking the chance.
- Track Record. Cause you know, the Bronco release went so smooth....

I'm happy with my decision.

Last November I was ready to order a '22 Lariat Crew Cab, because Ford has screwed up the Bronco release so bad I was thinking of canceling my reservation. The 5g Ranger has proven it's reliability, and I figured I couldn't go wrong. But, then I started thinking (which is dangerous, you can ask my wife). So now I'm holding out hope for some good news from Ford about this fiasco they call the Bronco, and my Bronco will actually be built before the next gen Bronco hits the lots. If I don't hear anything good by the time the 6g Ranger order banks open I'm gonna take a chance that the new one will be as reliable as ours is today. It's a gamble I know, but there it is.....

I know the 6G forums have a similar topic as to why people are waiting for the new model but I am curious why members are buying 2022's when the 2023's are right around the corner.

When I ordered my truck in August there were barely and leaks of the 2023, let alone of when it may actually come to the US (considering it took a while for this generation to get here). Considering what I know now I would still be on the fence on what to buy. At one end I really enjoy the looks of the current model, I took advantage of the current used car market ( sold my old truck for $4.5k with 250K miles), and the 2023 model was nearly 2 years away. The other end, I do like most of the interior changes. I like having more pockets and spaces to put stuff, the wider truck is nice, exterior still looks really good, potential for better fuel economy. After driving my cousins F150 I am still on the fence with the all digital cluster and information screens, not as much of a selling point as I thought it would be.

Curious on your thoughts?
I really don’t think the new 6G Ranger will be on dealer lots here until late 23 or early 24 and I was able to grab a 21 off a local lot new in early Dec. Wanted out of my 18 Canyon and got top $$ on trade. Paid more than I wanted for the Ranger but overall I’m way to the positive and enjoying the truck.

Very interested in the new 6G model but can take my time when it’s finally here and available now that I’m in a new 21.

I find it very interesting how many people are expressing an interest in buying a Ranger Raptor. I saw the prices of the F-150 Raptor when I was shopping for my 2020 Ranger and just about crapped myself. I like nice vehicles and came from 14 years of Audi's but I was able to balance cost versus features in my head. I just have a hard time with $90,000 for a pickup truck, even a very nice one.

What do you think a Ranger Raptor would cost?

What everyone has said - And because if things keep going the way they are, maybe I will get bumped to the '23 with a $1750 loyalty rebate also.

My F150 Lightning reservation was not chosen in the initial build of 15,000, so thinking that may be the '24 model vehicle.

And I 'need' something to haul remodel materials in other than my 2010 Jaguar as well.

I like the look of the 2022 better. The 2023 looks more...boxy and squared off in the front like an F-150 and I'm not really liking the look. I know a lot of people don't like the more rounded off "blob" look of a lot of mid-2010 SUVs , but for some reason I do. And of course the new model is going to be more expensive. Although I have a late-2022 order (Ordered on March 3, no word on scheduling yet) and I'll still take a 2023 if my 2022 order doesn't make it in and they're giving out extra rebates.

I like the look of the 2023s better, but still ordered a 2022 for lots of reasons.

I have a daughter turning 16 soon....need another vehicle in the next 6 months.

Cost...I'm sure the 2023s will cost more. I ordered everything I want for under $40k. I don't think I'll be able to do that going forward. I don't love the 2023s so much more that I'm willing to spend a couple thousand more bucks.

I have lots of car salesman friends...sales managers...I've always been told to never order the 1st year of a re-design.

If I change my mind in 2 years, and if truck prices stay crazy (which sadly, I expect), maybe I'll consider trading mine in, or selling outright and buying a new one. But I doubt it....unless I can profit of it in 2 years like most people can/are now.

I bought a late production 2021.

I am waiting for the Raptor, but I'm expecting it won't be here for two more years.

This, I don't really like the look of the 23 at all. Sure hope I don't get bumped ?. I ordered March 24th so I am guessing it's a distinct possibility, especially since I ordered a loaded cyber orange lariat tremor

From everything I have read the 2023 redesign isn't even suppose to start production until early summer 2023. It'll be fall 2023 until the new model actually shows up at dealers. If they are still struggling to fill Bronco orders a redesigned pickup could have supply constraints. I'd say if you really want a Ranger before 2024 order a 2022 now. If the new model comes out and you decide you really want one chances are resale value will still be excellent on the 2022.

I bought my '21 because I was in desprate need of a vehicle, and had gone to the dealer to buy a used f150, but I realized a new ranger with 10 miles was the same price as an f150 with 100k. No brainer at that point. I make do with the size (would love a 6.5ft bed, that .5ft would make a big difference for me) but love the mileage of the ranger. Would never have considered waiting for a '23, and I wish I had bought a '20 Ranger in August 2020 instead of buying and farting around with a crappy used vehicle until March 2021 when I was forced to buy new.

A few things pushed me to a 2022.

I think Ford has its hands full fulfilling commitments these days. I don't see the 2023 Ranger being generally available, at best, until Q4 2023. I was in the dealer earlier this week. They won't take orders on Bronco's, Super Duty's and Transit Vans, at all.

I also don't like buying the first model year of a new offering. There are a lot of moving parts bringing a new model to market, lots of chances for a few balls to get dropped... on my head. :)

I frankly don't need my truck to be any bigger. The power plant in the current Ranger is just about perfect for my needs. If I needed more power (like for heavier towing), I would get a bigger truck.

I've had poor luck with first year model cars in the past and best luck with the last year of a model. This made the Ranger 5g very attractive. It seems to hold its own against the competition pretty well.

While I like the looks of then new 2023 model, I don't really like it better than the 2022. It's just different.

Then there are these items:
  • Wider isn't better for me. I like garage space and easier parking
  • Everything is going up, so the 2023 will certainly be more expensive
  • I still like physical buttons, and the 2023 seems to have less of them

Great question and lots of obvious reasons and not so obvious ones too.

I ordered a current gen because I couldn't order a Maverick. I waited until the last week of open ordering and the tow package was no longer available, so that ruled out the Maverick for me.

I went home, bummed out, and decided to see what was the next economical truck I could get. We kayak a lot and that's the prime purpose for a truck. And I do love going to the dump too! =D

So I looked at the Tacoma, Colorado, Frontier, and Ranger. Looked at how cheap I could get each with their max payloads and tow capacities.

I had no idea the Ranger was the BOSS of ALL when it came to those numbers. And it came that way with a great modern engine with oodles of horsepower and torque. And $1000, or so, cheaper than the others.

Talk about good luck! I thought that not getting a Maverick was a bummer, but the Ranger will do far more for us (and let us change our future plans for what travel trailer we get).

Overall, I'm really happy and as far as getting this generation?

Like many have said: it's a proven model, Ford's had the chance (in theory) to work out the inevitable first year issues, AND there are a lot of accessories available right now for it.

It would be fun to have a 2023, but I'd like a truck now (well, by summer, hopefully), and I do like the looks and my only gripe is the cheesy Sync version I'm getting (especially compared to what the Maverick has). But being cheap economical means I'm actually okay with it.

On order: 2022 two-wheel drive Scab XL 101A with tow package, build date of April 11 (ha ha ha).
This is pretty much the reason I ordered a Ranger. I waited around until Ford closed the order banks. The salesman who took my Ranger order gave me a ride in his Maverick and I really liked it, but the possibility of actually getting one looked so far in the future that I came around to the Ranger. I also think the additional towing capacity will be better for me, too. It looks like a long wait for a Ranger, too, but almost certainly not as long as for a Maverick.

I needed a vehicle ASAP and the 22 works. It’s not my favorite vehicle I bought, but my payments are 1/3 of the last one so I have no room to bitch.
