I know this sounds scary but I'm having the same problem and I think my truck stops better after decent acceleration (turbo does some good work). Like it skips more on the way down and gets to first faster . That or I might just be slowing down fast enough to get to 1st before my complete stop anticipating the strange stop.
My eye opener was when I shifted into neutral from 50mph to a stop. Smooth as silk and it is what I would expect it to be like in gear. I have a 2013 Edge and it smooth as silk in gear. The Ranger is horrible with this. It really does ruin my purchasing experience.

It must be from ford trying to hit their mpg mark at the expense of comfort.

I have noticed that the trans always skips 2nd gear as I come to a stop. And further, regularly, and I think only when it's not fully warmed up, is that it lurches, gallops or surges when I come to a stop and it finally hits 1st. It's almost like it wants to run away from me at the red light/stop sign. It's to the point that I'm thinking it's a safety issue beyond just being annoying. Anyone else getting this behavior?
I've got the same issue. One ford dealer in town drove with me when I brought it in and said that it was the normal behavior. The second dealer I took it too agreed with me that it was unusual. But it took three weeks before the tech could be scheduled to do a re-program. Re-programming didn't change a thing :-(

I use "S" 100% of the time and experience the clunk from time to time, sometimes when warm, but mostly when cold. I'm going to have the transmission reflashed and the oil changed (which I will have to pay for) to see if that will change the issue for the better. In truth I'm not optimistic, but it's worth a try. I do not know what internals have been changed IOF this transmission to be used in the heavier duty pickups, but I suspect the clunk and other issues cited here are the result of the transmissions ability to carry heavier loads.

So i have experience the "clunk" when it downshifts from 3rd to 1st only if i brake really quickly if i brake a bit sooner and more smoothly and decrease the pedal force a bit as it comes to a stop it usually will not do it. I am still learning how to drive automatics after exclusively driving all manual transmissions for 25 years.

I'm really curious to know the results of your fluid change. Please do report back!

I'll say this - the transmission is an engineering feat and overall excellent. The occasional mismanagement of the computer to control gear selection would in no way affect my decision to buy another vehicle with the same transmission. IMO.

A 10 speed behind a 4 cylinder is probably never going to work the way we would all like it to. There probably will be some more software updates, but it's something we'll have to live with.

It's downshifting to help conserve the life of the brakes and yes, I think to help with mileage at the expense of comfort. I have found that if you slow very gradually it tends to not want to downshift into 1st gear too rapidly and that helps a lot with the surging forward upon downshift feeling.

Musts be a program strategy, my 2010 Raptor with 86K still does it to this day. Well it did, I traded it on my new Ranger. Guess once i pick it up, it will be a familiar phenomena.

I -only- notice it when I'm in city traffic and just slowly coming to a stop at a light or stop sign and it attempts to lurch out of my control at the last second. Totally makes me feel like and probably look like I'm not in control of the vehicle.

I guess I wouldn't say it ruined my experience, but it surely is a flaw that should be addressed, even if all they say is "we can't fix it".

Mine is smooth on downshifts all the time but when cold it hangs in 4th for a couple of seconds, spools up some rpm and clunks into 5th. After a mile or so it becomes smooth between the two gears.
I'm at 900 miles and will continue to monitor it.

My dealer said that corporate states it was normal operation and not a fault. He said he had a 2016 F150 that did the same thing and couldnt rectify it. I am not expecting a "fix" from Ford. When my 4 years are up I will be shopping around a lot more.

(sorry to revive a year old thread).
My 2021 is at the dealer now for clunky (not smooth) deceleration. I suspect it is a similar issue.

The actual transmission downshifts are usually not too bad. As someone mentioned, it seems like it keeps the torque convertor locked up too long.

In my case, as the engine rev's drop in each gear during deceleration, the 'lugging' engine is felt (IE not a smooth stop). Sport mode is significantly better, as is not having the A/C on (less engine load). I still think the torque convertor not unlocking at the start of deceleration is the issue. I also do not understand why the transmission has to downshift through many gears when stopping. If I drive a manual, I don't do that. Just push the clutch in as you stop, as the revs get too low.

This is my main drivabilty issue with this truck, which I otherwise really like (since I replaced the shocks, lol). I will post back what the Ford dealer reports.

By the way: Anyone have or try a tune to see if it helps the decelleration smoothness?
