The LS is cheaper to build and more compact overall making it a versatile option for swaps in smaller vehicle engine bays. They drop in a Miata really nicely if that gives you any frame of reference. For reference an all aluminum LS engine is only about 140lbs heavier than a Miata engine.

As an aside here the new Ford Godzilla engines have a nice footprint size-wise and would be interesting in a Ranger

heck with it being ford I wonder if the stock ECU would be compatible with the transmission? :D

That would be interesting! I wonder if anyone has tried a 3.5TT swap into a ranger? That'd be fun.

I'd also like to try a 3.5tt swap in an old Ranger Splash flareside. I dont know the size difference between the 3.5 and the 5.0, but I know that during the height of "mini-trucking" in the late 90s, people put 5.0s in those trucks all day long. If I had the cash, sounds like a fun project.

It's just the fact it's a Chevy in a Ford, I dont care what engine it is, it's just wrong.
Nobody stopped ford from making a solid LS competitor, but Ford wasted too much time on the modular/triton platform. I won’t say coyote swaps are uncommon, but they’re certainly more expensive and don’t have the same aftermarket support that the LS platform does. It may feel wrong to swap an LS into a Ford, but Ford doesn’t have any similar motors to swap for the power and price point.

I fully agree, Ford went down the not so great modular path, Chevy has always done a better job with their engine lineup, just the interchangeability alone is so much nicer.

LS? Ew, no. Now a Coyote swap, that I can get behind.

he is not getting the same MPG as we are LOL
already being able to "drag" another truck up hill in the N.Y mud and getting 20.7 MPG while doing it, I think I will keep my truck just the way it is :)
and I dont want to void warranty LOL

I agree with this statement 100%. I know the LS is a popular motor, it's cheap an plentiful an good support, it's still a chevy! They are the enemy.

I really hate seeing small block chevy motors in classic fords like the '32 ford an I've seen a few in the cobra replica builds. I always said if I ever have money to just waste an throw at a project I'm going to buy a '65 or '67 Vette an swap a ford motor into it an park it at the car shows next to someone with a '32 ford with a chevy motor.

I love seeing folks do crazy builds, a sbc in a 32 Ford is done because it is cheap and I can get on board with that. I helped a friend/neighbor build his 34 Ford Street Beast 3 window coupe. He used a new sbc 350 crate motor because he was able to buy it for $2500 and he used a GM 700R4 tranny he bought rebuilt from TCI for $1200. A 347 sbf crate motor from BluePrint is going to cost you $7000.

A former coworker of mine was into Porsches and the Porsche faithful would go ballistic when someone would swap a sbc or LS into a 944. This is a fairly common swap that there are kits to do it. There is a Motortrend show called Runs Good and they picked up a partially finished Porsche 944 LS swap and finished it on the show. They went to a road course and tested it against a brand new 911 Turbo S and the 944 ran right with the 911.

Same. When I was in high school, I went to a car show where a guy had shoehorned a Cadillac Northstar V8 into a Pontiac Fiero. Another guy had put a new 911 engine into a VW bus. Awesome stuff.

The "chevy's are cheaper an parts are more available" argument was true 40 years ago. When Ford launched the 5.0 HO with the roller cam that started to change. You might save a few bucks but you're driving a bastard! The LS cost compared to the coyote is another story. The Hemi's get swapped into a lot of stuff now too since they've sold a million cars and trucks with them. The problem is you're stuck with a dodge!

Guess my Chevy/GM hate is showing through.

My youngest brother loved Chevy's an hated Fords. He was a GM tech for several years. I asked him what they had him doing at work after changing dealerships an he said "taking care of recalls". I said oh that's great job security. He didn't think it was funny.

The difference in cost of building a Chevy verse Ford still exists today may not be as large a difference but it is still there, just go an peruse the Summit catalog. The problem with the 5.0 HO is it doesn't make any power to get it equivalent to an LS will cost thousands more than a using a stock or mildly modified LS.

As far as a car being a bastard any change from the way it came from the factory turns it into a bastard. All hot rods are bastards whether it is Ford in Ford or Chevy in Ford or Mopar in Ford. As a hot rodder I get more satisfaction by doing something different than following the crowd. That is one of the primary reasons my 33 Speedstar hot rod has a Hemi.

If I was determined to install a V/8 in my Ranger it would be a 351 windsor. Have plenty of experience with them in dirt track racing. They are a very durable engine and with the right mods make a ton of power

Agreed. I think the creativity and ingenuity to do something that isnt regularly done is what makes it fun! I like how the maverick guys are shoving the 2.3 ecoboost into those trucks now, and I saw on IG the other day (I cant find the post now) of some guy who had transmogrified the drivetrain and interior of a Cadillac CTS-V with the body of a 40's Buick. It was pretty sweet.

That is one of the primary reasons my 33 Speedstar hot rod has a Hemi.
Happen to have any pictures of this machine?

How much does a 351W weigh, in comparison to say a 5.0? I dont know why, but I think i always assumed they were much heavier. I'm probably wrong though.
