I 've only let it get low enough to chime a couple of times, but my Low Fuel light comes on at 1/4 tank and says 50 miles to empty.

I've never driven it far enough to test that but I think that 1/4 tank would go more than 50 miles.

I rarely let my tank go below 1/2.

The distance to empty number is just a general estimate. And especially at the beginning of any tank it's an estimate based on how the last tank performed, since it has no way of knowing how the current tank will do.

I would say if it's within a hundred or so (on either side +/-) then it's doing fine. If it says 50 when you've actually got 400, or vice versa, then maybe something wonky is going on. But otherwise I just use the distance to empty number as a guideline and the actual gauge to determine fuel stops. Though I rarely let it get below a 1/4 tank (1/2 tank in the winter) anyways.

The 1/4 tank to 50 miles remaining correlation isn't real. The chime at 50 miles is correct, but it has nothing to do with 1/4 tank, that's just a coincidence. It's weird that so many of you guys are seeing that. My 50 miles to empty chime goes off around 1/8-1/6 of a tank.

Though, like you said, it's only been that low a few times.

Agree rarely let mine get that low either. Mine did come one the other day and it seemed like mine was in between a quarter and an eighth of a tank. Which is probably pretty close. I would think you would want the DTE number to be a little conservative for safety. Like was said I rarely let my tank get that low especially in the wintertime.

That being said I thought I noticed in Forscan an item with something to do with the DTE calculations. Off hand can't remember where, IPC I think. If yours is being inconsistent I'm not sure what it could be.

Mine comes on the same too. Like you I usually fill up around 1/4 tank but when we were on vacation last week I pushed it farther. We were getting close to Flagstaff and I didn't feel like getting off the highway but I was low, lower than I've ever been. Well when I filled up it took 18.399/gals  I'll never do that again!

Geezh, you still had a good 10 miles or so to go. Is it sad that 18.4 is about a normal fill up for me :p At least around home. That said, I know exactly where all of the gas stations are (and which ones I want to use), so it's easy for me to get it down to 10 miles or so and be like "K, I gotta stop at that Mobil in 2 miles."

The point when the alarm comes on has nothing to do with tank level. It's based on average MPG since last fill-up. As was said the starting number is based on the average MPG of the last tank. It then adjusts as you drive. If you've been doing a lot of in town driving, fill up and go on a highway trip, you will actually see your DTE number go up as your average MPG goes up. This will also affect when the warning comes on. Average MPG is calculate based on mileage and fuel consumed not tank level. Only time tank level comes in to play is if you don't fill all the way up or sqweeze every drop you can into the tank. All it knows is if the gauge says full it's 19 gallons. Most gauges are not very linear anyway in my experience, has to do with tank shape.

It use to be a lot cheaper then a few years ago it shot up and that was it. I've seen the prices out where you are and boy it's really expensive out there! :curse:

I guess I'm an old fart because I remember 27 cents when I was a kid
The cheapest I remember was 0.85 for super back in high school. We use to get together on the weekends and everyone would pitch in their change and go put gas in someone's car so we could cruise around all night in it.

I resemble that remark! ? I can remember gas wars where it was 0.249/gal and it was like 0.329 for ever. "Ethyl " was a bit higher.

Worked at a Phillips 66 gas station when I was 16-17, joke was Phillips 66, name is the same as the gas price or you expect more from Standard Oil and you pay for it, now we rush to buy when ever the price drops a few pennies.
