I finally cut open my stock muffler to see what was in there. I sketched in how the exhaust gas travels through the muffler. It was interesting, I previously knocked out the one inch restrictor at the end of the inlet pipe and I was not able to find it when I cut open the muffler!? My best guess would be that it exited the muffler, but i find it very unlikely that it traveled through the spring loaded valve in the midpipe. The valve is spring loaded in the closed position.. Looks pretty restricted in my opinon!

I knocked out that piece long ago. Heard it slide around the next day and then nothing since.

Thanks for sharing. I've honestly never seen the inside of a muffler and admittedly never even thought about it enough to wonder what they look like or how they work. Now I have a better idea. So your pictures are appreciated. Oh and what does that thing on top of the middle pipe do?

That's the spring loaded valve that another member cut out and provided the image. I assume it's to reduce drone, but not quite sure. The exhaust flow opens it up, so it probably wide open under heavy throttle.

What an impressive design. Part turbo muffler, part glass pack and it even has a low flow flapper valve.

So since it has a flapper valve... that means our Rangers do have muffler bearings.

Where is the restrictor located? How far down the inlet?

Are there holes in front of it or does all the exhaust go through it?

Nice for a change to see something cut open other than the countless pics of cut oil filters, maybe this is the beginning of a new trend.

That's a great question. You can see the perforations in the photo of the internals of the pipe, but I sure don't see those perforations in any of the muffler photo's?

just a question -- why cut open the muffler? does changing it out help at all with power mpg etc? Ive been told long ago that engines need a certain amount of back pressure to function well what affect does the change have on the truck? does it make sound any less 4cyl ish? I love my little ranger but I sure do miss the V-8 sound from my 14 F150......

If you look at aftermarket exhaust companies most have proven, using a dyno, that there exhausts do increase HP... but not by much.... and they all sound worse than the stock muffler... well IMO anyway.

does removing the 1 inch restrictor help at all? I dont plan to do it but just really curious Id think its there for some reason like the one way valve to keep back pressure at a necessary minimum level maybe?
