I ordeed the front one from ebay and the wrong gears were on the box. I counted the ring and pinion teeth and verified they were wrong.

The new in the box Spicer set for the rear was marked as 4.46. In hindsight, I should've verified the front was as well.
That's really frustrating, I'm sorry you're dealing with that.

Could it be a bad CV?

The installer (that I didn't end up using) argued with me about gearing ratios. He kept telling my the fronts were 4.56 and the rear were 4.46 (obviously bad) even though both kits said 4.46. That is why I ended up going with the Yukon kit that included all pieces needed for install.

No, I don't think so.... the CV's are RCV with less than 5k miles.

Only thing I could guess is mismatched ratios. It make a hell of thump sound you feel (whole truck shudders) every rotation past 10mph (both 4H and 4L). Also, I have to put it in reverse to get it to change back from 4H to 2H. Going from 4L back to 2H works as it should (stopped + neutral + switch).

Wife thinks I've bought the truck version of Christine considering it's red, has 3 consecutive 6's in the VIN, the incident that happened a couple months after purchasing it (see my first initial post on this forum), and its current issues.... I'm beginning to think she's right.

Update: Turns out Spicer had the wrong gears in the right box (4.88 instead of 4.46). Below is my email to Spicer...... will post an update once I receive their answer.

My name is Scott ********. I’ve been in the process of building an overlanding vehicle with the goal of my wife and I starting a YouTube channel in the upcoming future. My vehicle is a 2023 Ford Ranger Tremor, and my wife drives a 2023 Jeep Wrangler.

In October of last year, I started the putting together the parts for the last phase of my build. This included larger size tires and the appropriate front/rear ring & pinion gears for the Ranger. I acquired a new set of 4.46’s (complete and welded to the carrier) for the front diff (Dana M190) from a longstanding member of the Bronco6G forum. For the rear diff (Dana M220), I purchased a new set of Spicer 4.46’s to match the front from Jeff’s Bronco Graveyard (see attachments for invoice). I also purchased the corresponding front and rear rebuild/install kits from Dana/Spicer for the front M190 and Yukon Gear and Axle for the rear M220 (see attachments for the M220 Yukon invoice). I then had my local mechanic shop (Elite AutoWorks) perform the installation.

After the installation was completed and I picked up the vehicle, I tested both 4/Hi and 4/Lo to make sure everything was working correctly. What I discovered was a rotational difference between the front and rear wheels (same size tires on all 4 corners). The front appeared to be binding and was rotating at a slightly slower speed than the rear. I brought it back to Elite and explained what I was experiencing. We concluded that the front and rear axle ratios might be mismatched and decided to put the truck on the lift to verify. While on the lift, we performed the following tests front and rear:

Front Diff: 1 Tire rotation equaled approx. 4.5 driveshaft rotations. This equated to our target ratio of 4.46/1.
Rear Diff: 1 Tire rotation equaled approx. 4.9 driveshaft rotations. This did not equate to our target ratio and was somewhere near 4.90/1.

We then pulled the cover off the rear diff (see attached images) and read the casting numbers etched on the new ring gear. It turns out that the casting number (10073112 / see attached images) indicated we had received a 4.88 ring/pinion set instead of the 4.46 set we had ordered. The factory Spicer box we received from Bronco Graveyard (sealed and unopened from its initial point of origin… Spicer) indicated the set was a 4.46 ratio based on the part number labeled on the outside of the box (# 10145092 / see attached images).


To summarize our findings:

Part # on sealed Dana/Spicer ring/pinion box purchased from Jeff’s Bronco Graveyard (10145092) = M220 4.46 Ring and Pinion.

Installed Ring Gear number stamped on actual Ring Gear received from Bronco Graveyard and packaged inside Dana/Spicer box (10073112) = M220 4.88 Ring and Pinion.


In closing, I’d like Dana/Spicer to rectify this situation by providing us the following:

1. (1) correct Dana/Spicer 4.46 (M220) ring and pinion set.
2. (1) Dana/Spicer (or Yukon) M220 installation/overhaul kit.
3. Cover the additional cost to remove the incorrect gear set and replace it with the correct one (see attached quote).

Below are the names and contact numbers of everyone involved should Dana/Spicer require confirmation or have any questions related to resolving this issue.

For those that had the gears installed by a shop, did you still have a break in period that you were responsible for? I have installed gears myself and there was a 500 mile break in period both times which required driving around 45 mins at low speeds and then allowing the diff to cool for an hour. I imagine manufacturers have a way to avoid this so maybe differential shops have the same tool?

If you did have a break in period, did the shop do the fluid change after the break in period was up?

I had a break in. For mine. It involves basically staying off the highway for long periods of time. Ideally, you let the gears heat and cool. My shop did the fluid change for just the cost of fluid. They claim they don’t charge the labor because they wanna be able to inspect the fluid 500 miles after the install.
