I just got the email from Ford saying that the synch 3 has a free navigation update. While doing the update, I normally leave the engine running with the keys inside, I have done this before no problem. This time the engine has turned off twice by itself after idling for 20 or 30 minutes, this disrupts the update and says update failed upon restarting the truck because it cycles power to the radio. I am now trying with the engine off but ignition on and the battery on a trickle charger. I am on synch 3.4 23381.

has anyone run into this issue? This is definitely new, my truck definitely never used to automatically turn itself off.

You have to go in the truck menus and turn off auto stop. Auto Stop will stay deactivated until the next ignition cycle. Auto Stop is what shuts down the engine after 30 minutes. The instructions that come with the download files give this info. Also, you don't have to run the engine if you put a 10 amp charger on the battery.

Edit: Auto stop is really Auto Engine Off in the truck menus.

I'm curious...can't you update while driving and running errands? 30min idling must really kill your MPG...I think the battery can handle accel mode for that long even without a charger...

The Nav updates take a lot longer than 30 minutes. If I remember correctly, some of my Nav updates took over an hour (1 hr 45 minutes?)
I used a 10amp battery charger without running the engine.

Another reason why I prefer carplay and use Waze...still, why can't an update be done while driving and doing errands?

You could if don't shut off the engine until the upgrade is complete, or it will not complete, and you would have to start over.

IIRC, updates can only be done over Wi-Fi, not over cellular connections, so no updating while driving. You could try the USB update routine, good luck with that.

Nav map updates are all USB. Only the Sync updates are OTA.

the Nav update is a one-time deal from Ford, and is different from updating Sync (they want to sell you more often updates in the long run, I'll bet). I'm holding out a year or two before I update the nav in my '23 (and use Waze/Android Auto anyway)

I will find out within the next 2 years if this is 3 years or 5 years (Free) as it appears to vary for some.
We shall see. I am at 26 months of ownership now. I vagally remember reading that I had 5 years of updates but cannot locate that document.

Either way, I rarely use the Nav but have my Garmin (Keep Updated) and also phone (Nav) if needed. I have honestly never used the Phone (Google) Maps, prefer to just keep it simple and ease of use.

With that said, I have updated the (Maps/Nav) 3 times since ownership. NA 21 / NA 22/ NA23.
So, with next update will determine if it is Years or Times for the 3 year (Guideline)
As I took ownership (new) at NA20 in Sept 22 with a Map (Update) release in Nov 22.

I don't leave the truck running. I turn it to "ignition on" (or press the Start/Stop button w/o pressing on the brake) and have it hooked to a battery tender during the update process. Has worked so far on both of my Sync 3 vehicles (one with keyed ignition and one with Start/Stop button).

Map updates via USB have taken 45-60 minutes.

Mine lasted until I was out of the 3 year warranty. The next Map update after 3 years, Ford wanted me to pay for.
