It wasn't clear to me - was the 50K lives saved over a 30 year period, or annually? It's a big difference.

I believe it was 50,000 lives saved over the 30 years - an average of almost 1700 lives a year - which is a big deal - if you were one of the 1700 lives that were saved. My guess is that the yearly numbers were a lot larger when they first started and the yearly number has been shrinking ever since.

It was really interesting to see how poorly even a 1996 car performed compared to a modern one. It was sad to see a pristine 1996 vehicle destroyed but it very much illustrated their point.

Most (myself included) had the same mindset that the older ones were all steel and could withstand anything. Boy we were wrong.

The test dummy loosing its head was a real eye opener.

I live about 10 minutes from the Vehicle Research Center at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in Ruckersville, Va. It is in a secluded location just north of town on quite a large piece of land.

You can't not supposed to cut through the floor joist as it weaken them. They're supposed to be on hangers and pitched downwards.

Yeah, there's not much left of those joists. They're notched almost all the way through!

Many times this is a case where someone says "I have a friend who'll do it cheaper".
