I believe it was 50,000 lives saved over the 30 years - an average of almost 1700 lives a year - which is a big deal - if you were one of the 1700 lives that were saved. My guess is that the yearly numbers were a lot larger when they first started and the yearly number has been shrinking ever since.It wasn't clear to me - was the 50K lives saved over a 30 year period, or annually? It's a big difference.
It was really interesting to see how poorly even a 1996 car performed compared to a modern one. It was sad to see a pristine 1996 vehicle destroyed but it very much illustrated their point.
