Wow, you've certainly have had your share of problems. It's troubling to see these posts with so many issues and while this forum only represents a small portion of Ranger owners, I'm sure there are many more out there having the same ones.

I've owned over a dozen Ford trucks and vans and honestly if I had half of those issues I would've dumped it by now. Luckily both my Rangers have (so far) been trouble free but anything mass produced is going to have some issues. It's how the manufacturer handles it, that is the key. I'm done being loyal or a fan boy to any brands now. If they can't make a good product I'll move on to something else. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
I appreciate your response. The dealership is a small and family owned. They have been great with all of this and are going to really help me get into something different. I only want a truck and the 10R80 really worries me. I’ve had 5 cars get over 200k in mileage in my lifetime and looking for longevity but sadly I think car companies build them to last just the warranty.

I had the CDF replaced with the updated drum. It stopped the really hard shifting where it loses power and slams into gear but it still shifts hard from 4-5-6 gear.
Change your trans fluid and add a 10oz Bottle of LubeGard. It cured all my transmission issues except the poor shift strategy which is a Software issue. To make this job simple, purchase an MBS Transmission dipstick. Then suck the fluid out through the dipstick and refill the exact amount.

I had water leaking into the cab that cause mold issues. The rear vents were leaking and replaced.

Seal the vents closed. I used an aluminum plate. I did it to keep the mice out, but no water will get in.

The truck shudders when coming to an abrupt stop but the dealership couldn’t replicate that.

Tom Woods has a fix for that. A nice new 1 piece driveshaft.

The truck bucks when driving 25-35 and the dealership couldn’t replicate that.
DPFE Sensor and / or Spark Plugs

When the trucks in 7-8-9 gear, it jerks when I let off the petal or engage the petal. Dealership couldn’t replicate that.

Try lubing the driveshaft slip joint if it is still doing this after the transmission fluid change and LubeGard treatment

I’m trying to be loyal to Ford but all this trouble with only 30k miles on the truck has me looking for a replacement.
Yeah, this s is tough one. Ford quality sucks right now. I've been down this road, and my Ranger is finally behaving itself.

I have spent more money on necessary changes and maintenance on my 2020 Ranger than on my last 5 previous autos combined! And I only have just under 23,000 miles on it!

But I think that I am over the hump. Only time will tell.

I think a lot of us long for the simple days of trucks and cars but market demands have given us technologically loaded, fuel efficient and safety minded vehicles that will only be 'current' for a brief time.

The cost and degree of maintenance and/or 'modification' is something to consider in keeping a truck.

The argument to keep a 5G as it relates to this forum is that 1) new trucks aren't getting cheaper 2) we are sorting out what isn't really great and addressing that 3) trucks generally have a longer utility than sedans 4) insurance and taxes are less as they get older and 5) it makes us look like smarter consumers over the long run.

So for fun, I just got my '19 Lariat back from the shop. My symptoms were basically a rough 3-4-5 up-shift and 5-4-3 downshift. Problem was worse when cold, and when warmed up it would do this on occasional, but most times it shifted smooth. The issue had gotten a little more pronounced, so I decided to take it in. Software was updated about a year ago, which helped a little, but not much. Shop diagnosed it as the main control unit, even with no trouble codes stored in the system. I read the description and the tech was very thorough and discovered that I had sticking valves, specifically the main pressure valve and the the clutch gain valve. Also, some scoring was noted. They replaced the main control, refilled fluid, updated software, road tested and reported smoothing shifting. Driving it home this evening and I agree, the truck has never shifted this smooth since I bought it with 40k miles. I have 77k miles now. Very hopeful this has resolved my issue. Time will tell. My shop told me that the cdf failure is mostly on the F150, very rare to see on the Ranger, tough it does happen.

I’ve had a bunch of what Michael is reporting including a read end tear down after only 3 months of ownership (rear end re-sealed), drive shaft wobble, the CDF drum issues, multiple APIM locking up and parking brake issues, yet I still enjoy the truck…just not when it’s having problems.

I used to never buy any warranties and I’m not even related to a dealership or any warranty salesmen, but having the Ford Protect really changed my mind about keeping this truck as I have 8 years or 140k miles left on the warranty and the 10/175k was only a grand more than the 150k.

I used to sell consumer warranties as part of my jobs in the past and even then was biased against them in general. Time on the market, potential replacement cost of wear items in essential systems and overall complexity of the 5G made my choice to buy and extended warranty this time around easy.

I’ve also had most of these issues on my 2020 Fx4, this woukd have been great to see at the start. I also had to replace the fan hose with a silicone one, and seal plastic pieces above the engine to stop dripping onto the engine with form-a-gasket. Thanks for listing all these, the only one I havent had done is a single driveshaft. CDF finally replacing and with a soft shift tow tune, this truck finally drives like it shoukd and shoukd hopefully Be good to 100k+.

Just wanted to update that the trans has been perfect after the CDF drum replacement and valve body cleaning.

The dealer says that a lot of 10R80 equipped vehicles have been coming in, but feels the Ford “fix” is solid and should take care of the problem.

Hoping for the best, if not I got the 10/175k Ford Protect plan just in case!

Ford can fix their faulty design np...but sorry if you're early adopter and out of warranty...

yeah, people who got early models and didn't get an extended warranty (or bought used) got screwed. Ford doesn't seem interested in repeat customers.

As a former 2019 owner. My sentiment also. Ford did not do us right.

So after all this (new valve body, new CDF drum, new outer shell, etc) I have one question: does the 10R80 normally shift “hard” from 3-4 the first time it goes through that shift?

I have a “reluctance to move” in 1st and a 3-4 bang only the first time of the morning, when the truck has only run for a minute or 2, and never after.

Has not gotten worse or better, but just curious.

My truck has had a hard shift when cold since it was new (6+ years now) - but for me it is always 1-2 or 1-3 (depending on what it decides to do). I know that even though the fluid is thin it doesn't flow well when cold, so I usually try and warm it up for a few minutes when it is cold out.

I got the CDF drum TSB done a few months ago. Now it doesnt slam like it did before. 1-3 and some other random gear shifts were knocking hard sometimes. It is better but still jerky. It's like i'm shifting a manual trans, especially in the 3-6 gears area and when im going to stop. Downshifts to 0 are not smooth, pretty much all the time.

I'm in the same boat as you. Wondering what is considered normal and what is not.

Ford corporate helped me outside of warranty. I just covered the transmission they did the rest. $2200 out of pocket with a military discount as well. All you gotta do is ask. I have owned 9 other Fords which I brought up on the call.
