I'm waiting to see when or if the 6.8L Godzilla comes out. Rumor is it will find it's way into the F-150 and S650 Mustang. Possibly as a 5.2 Coyote and/or 3.5 EcoBoost Raptor alternative or replacement.
Supposed to be OHV like the 7.3L and the wildest speculation has it as the ICE side of an F-SuperDuty hybrid.
It's being referred to as a "Godzilla" derivative, but also as a lower deck hight & wider bore spacing Coyote. Most likely the last V8 of the decade, maybe ever.

We haven't heard from the King Ranch guy in a while...did he finish the build to his liking?
He disappeared after realizing he was building an "Autozone Special?"

This.

I'm hoping beyond hope the "Baby 'Zilla is the powerplant in the new S650. Really want to get me one of the "last of the V8 Interceptors."

I'm not sure the rest of the truck will enjoy that power and then being Off-road. I'm going to guess rear-end, driveshaft, axles, etc are all going to be upgraded as well.
I helped someone swap an engine. The stock trans bolted up to the new engine (fwd). I tried to warn them that was a bad idea. Less than an oil change later it shot the output shaft into the bell housing. I would say you are correct; more will need to be upgraded to deal with the extra torque. Unless he is gonna run doodoo tires.

Hi Patrick,

When we had a power upgrade at Ford Truck, it was surprising the upgrades that affected systems were needed.

Example was the 390 Cid 4 bbl carburetor power upgrade. engine mount rubber upgrade (new part number). rear axle change to 31 splines. U joint upgrade driveshaft with 1330 ujoints and so it went, involving many systems. Take away is backyard swaps create weak links that can bite you. And these mods do not go through Ford's durability testing to verify robustness.

Best,
Phil

Sounds like Ford is going after the LS engines with their Godzilla series. First I'm hearing of a 6.8...

fwiw a shop in aussieland swapped a 5.0 in a ranger raptor. They said it took a month or to do the physical swap, but i think 1-2 years to get the engine talking to the CANBUS systems to keep all the original functionality.

That said id love to see this build if you go through with it.

Okay guys, I am seriously looking into swapping a 7.3 v8 into my 21’ ranger. I think it would be the perfect swap. It’s reliable, has a lot of power, comes with a ac setup now, the 10r80 in our trucks works perfectly with it and the most important part is it is smaller than a 5.0 and barely bigger than a 2.3. Just wanted to know if anyone else has been thinking of this and better yet has anyone done anything with a 7.3 yet?
First, I think your crazy for wanting the headache, and cost, to get what will be a tank of a truck.

Second, I absolutely, unequivocally say DO IT! There's an expression guys like to throw around "never stick your dik in crazy" but I can tell you flat out, no one who has ever put it in crazy says that. Crazy is the most fun place you can put it, lol. Doing crazy builds are the most fun mods on a vehicle. Never mind the naysayers, if you can, I say do it.

With that said, that's a lot of weight on the front suspension, and with a feather light rear end balance will be terrible. Cornering and handling will be a wild ride, but it will be an amazingly fun truck to drive if you can keep it stuck to the road.

My biggest concern with me doing it, would be that I'd no doubt crash it in short order. That's like strapping on to Bronco, that's strapped on a bull, and putting spurs under both saddles.

I think the thing that makes these kinds of swaps challenging are all the mundane things like weight and balance, powertrain torque limitations (which lead to a lot of stuff broken from a twisting motion), etc.

V8 swaps have always attracted me. When I get an inspiration to do something like that, I invite one of my ME friends over for dinner. The fever usually passes before dessert. :)
