Well, from the data (mud?) here, I suspect the dealer is trying to replace Ford's "Job One" with their own. At least give the dealer a thumbs up!

I have a printout of a $427 bill to have Ford plug a scanner in and repeat to me what I told them when the vehicle was brought in.
They didn’t turn a wrench.
I got my keys back when I paid the bill.
I have a ‘20 Ranger, wife has a ‘17 Edge Sport. These will be the last Fords we buy.
Okay.

No way you paid that much for a code-pull. Can you scan the RO and post it?

My bank account says different.
Corwin Ford, Reno Nevada.
charged 2 hours labor, not a wrench was touched. The code wasn’t cleared either, I was simply notified of what is was.
They also want $1750 to replace the oil pan. ($275 part)
Not going to post the receipt- why bother? It doesn’t change a thing.

Because something is not right. Two hours for a scan that takes 5 minutes?
And you don't mention why you brought it in.
How does the oil pan fit it this story?

Customer: My power steering isn’t working.

Dealer: Hmmm, we better check the rear end.

I’m skeptical OP. I don’t think even the worst dealer would do that. Something smells, here. Not a fishy small…more like a TuRD smell.

Maybe I just need my second morning coffee.
Hi, first off FY for calling me a turd. I'm just telling you what the service adviser told me. As of today it's not the steering gear, apparently it throws the same code and the steering tightens if the rear end goes out. And all the ABS fail lights go on etc, As of yesterday it's only the rear end that's shot. "It had large shards of medal in both sides of the axle" Full rebuild needed. At 6k miles. I just simply asked if anyone else had the issue. And that makes me a fishy TuRD as you put it? WTF...

So, my new 2023 Ranger with 6,400. miles went into limp mode. I limped into the dealer, the truck was shuddering and had no power steering, only to be told the steering gear was bad and they needed to rebuild my rear end due to large shards of metal inside both sides of the differential! WTF. How does this happen to a 4 month old truck?
Between the spongy brakes, the transmission issue it's starting and a issue with an oil leak due to the oil filter not being installed correctly from the factory I'm really beginning to lose faith. My 2020 had a couple of issues (brakes and trans went south) but it was trouble free for 100k miles..until the trans finally stopped shifting from 6-8th gears.
Has anyone one else had the differential issue?
UPDATE: It's only the differential that needs rebuilt. It throws the same code for steering gear apparently and the steering tightens up in limp mode. I was just posting what the service adviser told me. But as of Monday it just need the rear-end rebuild. I'm not happy about it but it is what it is. I've opened a buy back claim with Ford as there's a few issues with the truck. Also when I first got the truck it had an oil leak issue that turned out to be the oil filter wasn't installed correctly.
I love ford Rangers. I want another Ranger-just not this one sorry for going on but I'm taking a lot of flack for this post.

1st I don't think Duke was calling you a turd, it just that the whole situation seems weird that you thought you had a steering problem, but it turns out it's the diff.
I now can see how the two are related. If the diff is locked up due to damage, steering will be more difficult. Both rear wheels turning at the same rate puts a bind on the diff and steering as the truck wants to go in a straight line.

How long would it take for them to just rebuild the diff? Or is it the same situation that parts aren't available?

The situation smelled fishy and the reference was to suggest it might be a post from a troll who wandered over from Tacoma World.

Abuse comes to mind with it needing a new oil pan.
The only oil pans I have had to replace in my 60 years of motorized vehicle ownership lived their short lives in the salt water laden bilges of boats.
The 2 vehicles I have now are the only ones that weren't salt belt victims.

I too wonder about the scan charge. I get one of those each time I get an oil change, and as I recall, it's only $10. The dealer is looking for work, but uses the scan like it was preventive maintenance.

The same dealer has two Bronco Raptors marked up by $25,000 over MSLP. I though Ford was stopping this sort of thing?

WTF is that the Ford 100th anniversary, hand made, individually numbered, gold plated pan, which comes with a certificate of authenticity personally signed by Henry Ford himself.

You ever changed an oil pan?
Rare vehicle where you don't have to undo a lot just to get to the point the pan can be removed. Then you R&R the pan. Then you un-do all that had to be done to get there. Adds up.
$275 When the MSRP is $266.67 for the pan?
