Certainly no harm in changing the filter and fluid on the transmission.

(Obligatory recommendation of adding Lubeguard Platinum here)

Really important detail I left out was I did replace the DPFE sensor as well spark plugs during maintenance. The truck drove a bit smoother, but nothing remarkable. Thank you for the input though
Are you still in the 5 year 60k warranty?
If so, then there are options for you.

First two are pretty much the exact same issues I had with my 2021 lariat at just over 50k miles and they had to rebuild the transmission because of it. I recommend having the dealer check it out while it’s still under warranty. Worst case, you eat the diagnostic and know what you’re up against. Best case, you get it all repaired under warranty and get another year/12k miles added to the transmission.

Just reading this made me question… I replaced the DPFE sensor in my truck a while ago but it’s still not shifting great. Almost exact symptoms as the original post in this thread. Harsh shifting from 3-4, slamming into gear during downshifts, etc. Mine is a 2021 and I’m on the fence between taking it into a dealership or replacing more sensors to try and see if it helps. Is the MAP sensor also something I should swap?
I had the same issue. It didn’t fail the test but did fail the test drive and they rebuilt it during which they found a lot of damage but refused to replace the CDF drum since that wasn’t directly damaged - so guess what’s already acting up again 😡. If you go to my profile I have a thread where I detailed my experience and even have pictures of the exact work that got done with parts. https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/trustable’s-10r80-thread.38204/

My advice - if it’s under warranty, take it in asap, if not, sell it asap, unless you don’t mind paying the price of a full rebuild or replacement. Which if you really like the ranger and have the money may be worth it to you.

Toyota dealer just confirmed I will have a new vehicle between march 20-April 15 so I will be selling as soon as I take delivery as the ranger warranty is up in may. I refuse to give ford any more money ever again.

Good catch and he is under the 5/60.

From his OP:

Hello All!

Long time lurker, first time poster. I took delivery on a 2023 Ford Ranger Lariat Splash Jungle Edition back in November from Carvana.

Truck has 45,000 miles and was built December 2022 but I've heard conflicting information if the "fixed" transmissions were used at this point.

Definitly worth it to take it to the dealer then! Just do it as soon as you can so you can establish a record of trying to get it fixed.
As a back up I'd also make a call to Ford corporate and let them know so they can document it. Just on case the dealer says "Off Roading" caused it.:(

It’s well past warranty, I’m at 72k and some change. I’ve definitely thought about possibly selling but a few things are keeping me from letting it go.
1) I’ve put way too much time and money into building it up how I want it. Lift kit, tires, wheels, overland stuff, winch, etc…
2) Something is very obviously wrong with the transmission. I’m sure anyone or any dealership interested in buying it would notice that right away and either A-lowball an offer or B-flat out say they don’t want it.
3) I’ve grown attached and don’t know if I could bring myself to get rid of it yet. It’s paid off so I either eat $6-7 grand to repair the transmission or get something new, then get stuck with another truck payment. I’m already paying off the wife’s truck at $650/month. Not sure I want to commit to another 5 year truck payment at the moment.

UPDATE:

Truck has been at Ford since Monday, but today I got a call from the service advisor that they have finished diagnosing the transmission and did find a failed part. I do not have details yet, but I’ll be sure to get a full breakdown from the SA. Very happy to hear they did find an issue and are fixing it fully under warranty as I would have been on the hook for $400 in diagnostic fees. Yes, $400. Due to claiming so many issues they SA said they’d need extra hours to diagnose the issue hence the $400 fee. I definitely took a gamble, but luckily it paid off. I will update this thread with all the repair info and a follow up on how it drives. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Glad to see it worked out well for you and you didn't even have to pay the $400 which is a nice bonus! It'll be interesting to see what the failed part is and remember it'll take a few miles for it to feel "normal" again.

Thank you! Really happy to not have to eat the diagnostic fee and get a generic answer like “it’s just how it drives”. I’m pretty sure they’re going to have to do an TCM relearn so I’m prepared for it to drive a bit strange until it adjusts. I’m also assuming they’ll replace the transmission fluid which would be great as that was my next scheduled maintenance. The SA did say it was due at 30,000 which I’m surprised to hear as I don’t see that in the online owners manual, but I could have missed it.
