I'm intrigued by your assessment that the 57mm 'cheater'(?) wheel swap in the turbo has smoothed the low speed performance. 390+anything horsepower in the truck is pretty impressive and I'd love to have it. Doesn't seem like it could damage the motor if the tune was done right.

Of course our niche truck is a limited market although a custom turbo sure sounds enticing. I'm still holding out for the fatter turbo intake replacements second run. Like the intercooler/charge pipes upgrades I expect there would be a refinement in how the truck runs.

In the dearth of posts about turbo upgrades and the loss of FastMavericks I looked again at other vendors. This Canadian shop will retrofit a factory turbo with two options and I wonder what real life application(s) these apply?

Frankly 340 HP is a pretty extreme performance goal for our 2.3 ecoboost. Stage 3 seems most reasonable, unless Stage 4 mimics @Loweredon33s setup? The cost(s) aren't but a couple hundred dollars more than the Stage 3 IIRC. Stage 4 is $1200.

A repost, but 'maybe' a turbo upgrade 'might' enhance longevity of the Ecoboost:

They are stock OEM turbos for the Ranger that have aftermarket oversized compressor wheels. They machine the OEM compressor housing to fit the oversized compressor wheel. They are not from any other application.

That’s not what he meant.

My setup uses a 57mm wheel similar to the stage 4
If you never plan on using ethanol I might suggest the stage 3 just because it’s going to respond a little quicker on gas.
Otherwise I would go for the stage 4 all day long. Even for a hot gas setup but definitely for e30 and FBO. I will admit that the big turbo takes a little bit to get used to but it makes for a great power curve and helps to save the bottom end by reducing the low end torque spikes. Once properly tuned it’s extremely nice to drive and can be controlled easily with the pedal.

Even with my stock setup E30 and a tune was great fun and the mileage per dollar was better than 10% ethanol premium.

I haven't seen E30 in years so if I were serious about changing the turbo Stage 3 would be the ticket at $1100 and midgrade/premium forever. With the stock Ford housing no one would be the wiser except me and my tuner ?

yup! I mix mine at the pump. E85 and 93 octane. E30 on our trucks is awesome, even on a stock turbo I made over 350whp!

Mustang doesn’t have much in common with Ranger. The engines are quite different. The engine management is substantially different.
Even if it bolted on (mounting flange and downpipe flanges are different) the oil and water lines are a little different and the wastegate is pneumatic instead of our electronic one. It’s been done but it is far from a bolt on part.

That would one heck of a comparo test - stock, 52mm, 57mm and the Stage 4.

So there’s a turbo for sale locally that was meant for an explorer. The guy says he bought it but never ended up using it. He’s asking $150. Should I buy it?? Will the explorers mate right up to our engines??
