I have zero brand loyalty when it comes to what is in my garage. Technologies and build quality have and will continue to fluctuate decade to decade, manufacturer to manufacturer. If Ford goes all EV good on them - that’s what they thought made sense at the time and hopefully they find success. For all those that are broken hearted over it, great news - plenty of other manufacturers still make, and will continue to make, ICE vehicles.

Controversial opinion: why get worked up over something you have —zero— control over and to some degree is inevitable anyways? If you think 150 years from now we’ll still be putzing around in turbo 4 bangers you’ve been had. Enjoy the moment - go sit by a lake, have a cold beverage, and chill out. Remember, it’s a vehicle, not your first born child, spouse, or favorite pet.

I was told my grandfather said he would never ditch his horse and buggy for one of them self propelled devil machines. He came around after fighting in WW1 and years later ended up owning a Nash dealership. Change is hard, but inevitable.
Your grandfather was smart. That mule transition was an intelligent, epic, no-brainer. Switching from a vehicle powered by enormous resources of fossil fuel to one powered indirectly by said fossil fuel, but also subjects the earth to significant wasteful mining, and can't go as far, and needs hours to recharge is not a smart transition. Now if the grid went nuclear, that might be a different conversation. But you still have range anxiety and charge times.

What will be happen is that we'll see longer drive ranges with EV's, and also hybrid charging like the Scout has so that range anxiety concerns will start to diminish over time. Toyota has already talked about a 600 mile range EV. Even Farely talks of this new California pickup concept having better mileage. Simply put, battery technology will improve as will hybrid options.

I could care less about engines or EV's to power my vehicles, I just care how they drive and handle offroad.

My only point of comparison is for MC's. Out of nowhere, a company in Spain developed their first bike ever, an EV, and it's as good, if not better than any ICE bike coming out of Japan (with a 50 year bike building advantage). I rode it and it was amazing.

If you do serious off roading I don't see EV's working. Too heavy an no where to charge them out "off the grid". Guess you could haul a hundred plus pound generator an a big can of gas for it.

But there have already been plenty of EV cycles offered in the US, like the Harley LiveWire.

Great point, EV's are heavier and wear out tires faster, and spread more rubber dust everywhere. So that adds to the argument of the so called "carbon footprint."

I was referring to a new EV dirt bike that entered the market....It's heavier but feels lighter, and it handles better than any ICE bike.

Nah....Have you heard of the Lightning? It only gets better from here. Hybrid charging will be more common so you can charge your EV with a gas generator, combined with better battery life that will come. BTW: I'm not hear to convince anyone. I'm just highlighting what Ford's plans are.

With all that extra weight tell me how you're going to air down to 18psi, or lower for serious rock crawling? I guess they'd be fine for some trail riding but I just can't see doing anything more than and easy trail with one. There's no way I would want to haul around full gas jug(s) with a generator while off roading either. Doesn't this kind of defeat the whole purpose of getting an EV and "going green"?

Now I really don't have a problem with EVs and I think they fit for bill for "some" people but will never take the place for everyone's needs. Heck 80% of our driving now is short trips with the longest being about 40-45miles round trip and an EV would probably suit us better but it doesn't mean I want one. I think the only thing that will get me out of my Ranger will be a hybrid. Even then I'm not sure It'd be worth it because we don't put a lot of miles on now and the added expense just wouldn't make sense. It's good to have options just don't force it down everyones throat. If they're so great (time will tell) then let people make up their own mind.?

And I quote Farely from yesterday's investor call.

"In 40 years in the industry, I've seen a lot of game-changer products, but the mid-sized electric pickup designed by our California team has got to be one of the most exciting. It's incredible package and consumer technology for a segment we know well. It matches the cost structure of any Chinese auto manufacturer building in Mexico in the future. How do we know that? Because 60% of the [BOM] (ph) has already been quoted.'

So when will we be seeing these? Seems they will follow Lightning model?

An article that is not behind a pay wall.

Maybe if they manage an EV truck that can go 500 miles empty, or that can tow 7,500lbs for 300 miles without stopping, then maybe it will be viable.

They may be fine for some locations. The infrastructure should be keeping pace with the roll out, the way they did with cell phones. How can someone in a fourth floor city apartment charge at home? I live in rural AZ. A round trip to the nearest major airport with a Lightning probably would require a stop to charge on the way home. On a good day, that would add an hour to a 3.5 hour trip. My Ranger could do the trip twice with a 15 minute stop for readily available gas on the second return trip. A vacation trip like the one I took last fall would require dragging along a generator. We went to Monument Valley, Four Corners and Canyon De Chelly. There is one charging station in all of Navajo Nation where all that is located. The land area of the Navajo Nation is over 27,000 square miles.

Very interesting conversations regarding EV's today. Me personally I would prefer a hybrid SCAB Ranger if they came over here. I did have a hybrid 2013 Ford Fusion which I wish I had kept but traded it for the Ranger. I love my Ranger but with gas prices being over $4+ a gallon it really adds up and makes me thing twice sometimes. How does Farley register his Chinese EV? He must drive illegally?? Hypocrite! I don't blame the UAW for giving him a bunch of crap.
