Four grand for an electric assist bike with top speed of only 28MPH? Then again if you go to Trek's website and search ebikes by speed, you'll start at $7k for one that goes 28MPH.
 Sub $5k is no where near the high end for e-bikes. I don't want to talk about this any more. LOL.

E bikes are being banned everywhere now. Apartment building bans because they burn down the whole complex. Banned for having too much speed for an unlicensed vehicle. Banned on country roads here in NY. Soon there will be licensing and insurance requirements that cost thousands a year to own one. Homeowners insurance won't cover fires from one. Sounds like another great investment by Ford. "We loose money on everyone but make up for it in quantity" should be Fords EV slogan
Not all are banned, mine is a Class 1, any trail allowing bikes on federal property I'm allowed on.

Most now come easily unlockable for speed causing the problem. I looked into one for our canal trails and it was illegal because it could be changed to full electric with pushing a couple buttons at the same time. Also almost all Chinese bikes come selectable class 1 to 5 out of the box making them illegal on the trails.

not even remotely close. you could double that and not even be at the top end for e-bikes.

there are fully human-powered bicycles on the market at $20k.

car manufacturers selling branded bicycles is nothing new. they've been doing it for years. an established bicycle manufacturer makes them and slaps the auto brand's logos on 'em, selling them for a markup. they're never a good value. and some of them are complete garbage as bicycles, even.
I remember when Porsche was doing this back in the 1990s. Someone else was doing it with Trek Y-Bikes, and there were others. Like you said, most had a lousy build spec and were over-priced.

I was working in the mountain bike industry at the time and we had a great relationship with Ellsworth Handcrafted Bicycles. They entered into a promotion with Mazda to provide 200+ Ellsworth Sub 22 hardtails to plunk on the roofs of cars in their U.S. dealer showrooms - they were a prize. Our company was tasked with providing the components, assembly and logistics. To keep the cost per bike as low as possible, the build spec was “Costco bike” grade.

It was a crying shame to put such low-end components on such a high-end, handmade frame. Of course, we kept a handful of frames for ourselves - strictly for “QA Testing”.

Meanwhile China is making real EVs for $10k. They're actually very popular at that price too. Not allowed in the land of the free though, partly because Brainchip Man would cry harder than when his wife left him. No $10k vehicles of any kind allowed actually.

China is building an EV plant in Mexico now to allow them to be imported to the US like other vehicles built in Mexico. Won't be long until our dumps are full of them and all the Hazardous they contain if someone doesn't force a 100% recycling tax on all EVs

There is no way they will allow a $10k new vehicle of any kind here mark my words. The push is to make them more expensive, go into more debt for them or to just give up and live in your pod and 15 minute city. A small lightweight EV might actually not be too bad but it was never about the environment and they prove it by not letting people have them.
